Secretly Canadian Celebrates Giving Tuesday with Continued Efforts to Fight Homelessness & Support The Work of New Hope For Families

Goose Cover Nina Simone's "Sinnerman" For the Label's Charitable Series of 25th Anniversary Singles, Out Today on Bandcamp: LISTEN

All Net Proceeds Benefit $250,000 Fundraising Goal

Today, Secretly Canadian celebrates Giving Tuesday with a continuation of its year-long campaign to support the urgent, humanitarian efforts of New Hope For Families. Through an ongoing series of 25 new singles, 12 classic album reissues and more to still be announced - each title specially curated in honor of the record label's 25th Anniversary - Secretly Canadian has manifested its quarter-century milestone in a mission to aid every homeless family in its hometown of Bloomington, Indiana. Since launching this past spring, all net proceeds from the SC25 initiatives have furthered a $250,000 fundraising goal for New Hope, the only place in Bloomington and the greater Monroe County where families with children can find shelter together, inclusive of all sexual orientations and gender identities.

To mark the occasion of Giving Tuesday, Secretly Canadian has partnered with Connecticut indie-groove band Goose to share their cover of Nina Simone's "Sinnerman," inviting listeners to donate as much as they can while journeying through the song's seven stirring minutes. Between now and its wide release this Friday, Dec 3rd, the track is available exclusively on Bandcamp, as Secretly Canadian commends the platform for everything it has done to give back to artists throughout the pandemic.

On "Sinnerman," Goose transform Simone's rendition of the spiritual, reimagining its gospel roots as enthralling dance grooves full of mathy guitars and head-spinning sounds. The band's guitarist/vocalist Rick Mitarotonda says, "Nina Simone's take on 'Sinnerman' has been a point of inspiration for many years. We've been wanting to play it for a while, and this seemed like a perfect opportunity. We're honored to be a part of this compilation and be involved in the great cause behind it."

There are currently a reported 334 unhoused people in Bloomington, Indiana, including 81 children and 34 families. Unlike most shelters in the US, New Hope For Familiesdoes not separate male and female populations, and with Secretly Canadian's donation of $250,000, the non-profit organization can build a housing unit to serve 20 families in a year (800 families in its 40-year lifespan), or provide services to 40 families for the full duration of their time with New Hope, covering housing, case management, deposits on rent or permanent housing, childcare and other special needs. Additionally, in April 2021, New Hope broke ground on several new facilities to better serve the Bloomington community, including increased shelter capacities and expanded childcare capabilities.

Over the past 25 years, as Secretly Canadian has grown from a basement operation into "one of the most respected independent labels in the world" (Variety), it has remained a Bloomington-based business with a Midwestern heart. Through SC25, Secretly connects its past, present and future, linking what's known and loved to what's newly imagined for the label, its artists and its home.
