Seth Avett Captures A Bush-Leaguer's Lament With “Laughing River,” His Poignant Second Preview From Greg Brown Tribute Record 

Today (10.14), Seth Avett shares “Laughing River,” the second and final preview from his upcoming album, Seth Avett Sings Greg Brown (coming 11.4). A tribute to the songwriting hero, “Laughing River” was Avett’s introduction to Brown’s work and a prime example of why he considers Brown “one of the finest American poets of the last 40 years.” 

One of Greg Brown’s most poignant and evocative songs, “Laughing River,” tells the story of a slugger who decides to hang up his spikes after decades in the minors. “Well I'm trading in this old bat for a fishing pole. I'm gonna let the Laughing River flow right into my soul,” Avett sings, channeling resignation and hope, acceptance and yearning, all in one plaintive tune.

“‘Laughing River’ is one among many standout songs written by Greg Brown, it just so happens that it’s the first one I fell in love with,” says Avett. “I couldn’t imagine a more solid and sincere folk song.”

“Laughing River” follows the record’s first preview, the stripped-down and syncopated “Good Morning Coffee.” Alongside the album release on November 4th, Avett will open The Avett Brothers’ show at Brooklyn, NY’s Kings Theatre with a Greg Brown-centric set.

From stories of love, lost youth and social decay (“The Poet Game”) to capricious fate (“Just A Bum”) and redemption (“My New Book”), the album’s scaled-back sound foregrounds Greg Brown’s poetic narratives — and, like a faithful film adaptation of a short story, it deepens one’s appreciation for the original text by highlighting their subtle emotional and melodic undercurrents.
