"Soul-stirring" (NPR) Icelandic 'Newcomer of the Year' Júníus Meyvant Brings His Freaky-Folk Pop to the U.S. with New Album 'Across The Borders,' out November 9

Iceland's eccentric freaky-folk pop savant Júníus Meyvant will release his sophomore album 'Across The Borders' on November 9 via independent Icelandic label, Record Records.

Self-produced by Júníus Meyvant & engineered and mixed by Guðmundur Kristinn Jónsson (Ásgeir, Erlend Oye, Hjálmar) at the renowned Hljóðriti Studio on the outskirts of Reykjavik, the richly orchestrated album embraces a wide palette of sounds and is awash with soulful, charming melodies. Throughout the eleven tracks, the natural warmth of Júníus Meyvant's unmistakeable vocals are matched and heightened by a full string section and brass ensemble, creating a hearty wall of blissful sound.

"The theme of the album lies in the title," says Júníus. "Always being on the move, seeking a better life, and not being afraid of everyday tasks. It is a mixture of self-awareness, self-pity, and self-control. Trying to be a better person minute by minute. Trying to bury this ego we've all got and to also understand why we have an ego and big dreams."

In this vein, first single "High Alert," available today, juxtaposes an upbeat sound with a darker edge in the paranoid and self-pitying lyrics.

Born and raised on the Westman Islands off the south coast of Iceland, Unnar Gísli Sigurmundsson has been releasing music under the moniker of Júníus Meyvant since 2014. His debut release was 2014 single "Color Decay" which garnered praise across Iceland and in the U.S. from the likes of KEXP and NPR. The following year, Júníus went on to receive 'Best Single' and 'Newcomer of the Year' at the Icelandic Music Awards. After successful tours in Europe and the U.S., Júníus Meyvant released his debut full length, 'Floating Harmonies' in 2016.

Júníus Meyvant will return to the stage with his full band at this year's Iceland Airwaves festival, with additional international tour dates to be announced soon.
