Today, Talkhouse announces the inaugural edition of Talkhouse Reader, a brand new print and digital zine launching next Tuesday, November 7th. Featuring original essays, criticism and conversation about music and film from the people who make them, the publication will further embrace the first-person storytelling and artist-focused mission that all of Talkhouse is built upon. From Talkhouse.com's online media platform to the award-winning Talkhouse Podcast Network, Talkhouse Live events and now Talkhouse Reader, each step forward continues to prioritize authenticity, credibility and creativity, bringing its audience deeper and more directly into the minds of its favorite musicians, actors, filmmakers and others in their respective fields.
For this first edition, helmed over the course of summer 2023 by Talkhouse Music editor-in-chief Annie Fell and Talkhouse Film & TV editor-in-chief Nick Dawson, Talkhouse Reader surveys the city it calls home: New York. What began as an attempt to deliver a State of The Union on the current corners of music and film ended up evolving into a much wider and more personal discussion. Across the issue's 50+ pages, New York legends and the newest members of the scene both reflect on what it means, if anything, to be a "New York artist" right now and throughout time.
Artists in conversation include Bob Gruen and the Kills, Bush Tetras and Gang Gang Dance, Joey Beltram and Jonah Almost, and Water From Your Eyes with Model/Actriz. Panda Bear and Avey Tare share an oral history of Animal Collective's NYC beginnings, while additional essays come from Greta Schiller on the West Village in the 1970s, Charles Lane on the '77 blackout, Lizzie Borden on when Scorsese's After Hours filmed on her block, Eszter Balint on when Manhattan got rich, Honeychild Coleman on the East Village roots of the Sista Grrrl Riots, Craig Head on Long Island, and Patio's Loren DiBlasi on Ridgewood. Special contributions by Cassandra Jenkins, Craig Finn, Crystal Moselle, Dirt Buyer, Fievel Is Glauque, Joanna Sternberg, Malice K, Rebounder, sadie, Savannah Knoop, The Dare and many more are also featured, offering creative insight that spans genres and generations.

"At a time when it feels like every other week, the shuttering of another beloved publication is announced, we feel proud and very lucky to be adding this new dimension to Talkhouse's editorial," says Annie Fell and Nick Dawson. "We hope to make it a regular element of our platform going forward."
At Billy's Record Salon in Brooklyn on November 7th, Talkhouse will celebrate the inaugural Talkhouse Reader with a launch party open to all. From 6:30pm-10pm, the night will include numerous artists who appear in the first issue: a live podcast taping from zine contributors, performances from May Rio and Miracle Sweepstakes, DJ sets by Anastasia Coope, and more to be announced. Entry is free, no RSVP needed.
In addition to Talkhouse Reader, Talkhouse Podcast Network has recently launched brand new series such as Solicited Advice with Alison Roman, as well as the latest seasons of That's How I Remember It with Craig Finn, and Open Mike Eagle's What Had Happened Was, devoted entirely to conversations with Questlove. The network's rapidly-expanding roster also includes hit shows like How Long Gone, the 2023 Signal Award-winning Björk: Sonic Symbolism, Jokermen, Santigold's Noble Champions, Talkhouse Podcast, Aquarium Drunkard's Transmissions, and more to be revealed soon.
