On "Every Dawn's a Mountain"
“In rare, precious moments, songs can announce themselves, seemingly out of nowhere. These announcements feel like contractions of the heart and brain, and as a songwriter, you must learn how to recognize them so that the song that wants to be born can fully arrive. Any plans made prior to that moment need to be canceled until you've safely guided the song into existence.
The writing of 'Every Dawn's a Mountain' was just such a case. On a busy day full of planned meetings and dinners I briefly picked up the guitar in the morning, not anticipating I wouldn't let it go for the rest of the day. The chords and melodies came quite fast, but the lyrics needed more time and focus, so after about an hour of writing I canceled all my plans. Several hours later, except for some minor tweaks that I would make at a later stage, the song had assumed form.
About a week later I left on tour, where PJ (my sound engineer and long-time studio collaborator) recorded me playing the track in an Airbnb, with a setup constructed of cardboard boxes for lack of mic stands. The next day I woke up early and found him already awake in the kitchen, working on his computer. He had chopped up a sample of a Belgian choir singing an old polyphonic Flemish composition. Upon receiving the headphones and listening to what we'd recorded the night before, joined by those beautiful angelic voices of the choir, it moved me tremendously. That very recording with the addition of the sample became the foundation on which we built the rest of the arrangement.
Although 'Every Dawn's a Mountain' immediately felt like the perfect title for the song, it took several months before I started contemplating it as a title for the record. Most of my creative process, whether writing or recording, tends to be a work of (often laborious) revelation rather than carefully coloring in pre-drawn lines and figures. As the picture of the album became clearer by the day, 'Every Dawn's a Mountain' began to seem like the only right choice for a name. These words, in a way, express the essence of the album, supporting and overarching it in its simplicity and duality.”
