Today, the Brooklyn-bred glam-pop duo Matte Namer (they/them) andFrankie Rex (they/them, he/him) known as The FMs have released their newest alt-electro track “Record Store,” an ode to cherishing what once was and the things we have lost wondering if they will ever come back to us — the track feels especially timely played in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic. The video, for the track, directed by the legendary Matt Mahurin (whose vast videography spans artists like U2, Metallica, Tom Waits, Alice In Chains and Queensrÿche) captures the bittersweet feeling of yearning for the past amidst stacks of vinyl records in an old LA record store.

“Record Store is about what once was and now isn’t,” said Matte Namer.“It’s about the loss of things we once took for granted and how we feel more passionately about those things after they stopped existing. As is often the case with The FMs, the song is also about freedom,” Namer added. “In this instance it’s about losing our freedoms during the height of the covid pandemic and wondering if we’ll ever get them back again.”

“The song “Record Store” was written during a particular moment of time about the present moment, the past which felt further away than ever, and confusion and anxiety about the future. Upon watching the video for the first time it was like a time machine for the heart, stepping back into the moment and the emotion behind when the song was created. We were privileged to get to work with our favorite video director of all time Matt Mahurin, who continues to break artistic ground and bring novel approaches to the music video medium. The shadows and dreams called upon touch the mood of the zeitgeist: melancholic, nostalgic, confused, and when we're lucky, a dash of hope.”-The FMs

Earlier this year, they released their double-single (“Song X” and “Bad Girl”) via DSPs & vinyl paired with the release of the metaphorically brilliant and visually stirring video for single “Song X (also directed by Mahurin) which is aimed to help dismantle the gender binary and celebrate the and nuances of every individual’s gender experience and journey.

Though officially formed in 2017, Matte Namer and Frankie Rex have been friends since their high school years growing up in NYC — a time in both of their lives that was rife with moments of self-reflection/analysis, ostracization, depression, and experimentation. Both Namer & Rex found their journeys of self-discovery and identity weave with one another, and with a shared musical bedrock of artistic inspirations (artists that unapologetically march to their own beat like Nine Inch Nails, St. Vincent, A Perfect Circle, New Order, Elliott Smith, to name a few), The FMs were born.

Whether it was through the self-curated immersive live performances that helped start their career (intimate and inclusive underground art performances that took place on a historic boat docked in Brooklyn) or via their 2017 debut album ‘Machinacene Epoch’ (which took cues from glam, synth-pop, industrial, stoner rock, dance music, and beyond), The FMs have been long-standing proponents of using one’s own unique voice to continue important conversations about topics like gun violence, toxic masculinity, selfie culture, and artificial intelligence.
