The Rubinoos have shared their new song "Phaedra" today, off their upcoming album From Home (August 23 / Yep Roc Records), and sat down with The Vinyl District to discuss the astonishing 49-year journey that's led them here. Like each of the twelve tracks on From Home, "Phaedra" was co-written by Rubinoos founding member Tommy Dunbar and fellow Bay Area musician (and From Home's producer) Chuck Prophet - a self-avowed superfan who saw the group live dozens of times as a teenager. "Phaedra" is a perfect encapsulation of From Home and why the album marks a return to the original spirit of The Rubinoos - stunning harmonies, infectious melodies and a quick-witted "Beach Boys backed by a garage band" sound that's completely and singularly their own.
Listen to "Phaedra" and read an interview with Jon Rubin and Tommy Dunbar from the power pop legends, as well as Chuck Prophet, here: http://www.thevinyldistrict.com/storefront/2019/07/the-rubinoos-and-chuck-prophet-the-tvd-interview-premiere-phaedra/
The Rubinoos' incredible story begins in 1970, when no one in the band was old enough to drive a car, and includes an unlikely rise to hero status at the end of the decade (1977-1980) which saw them release two albums, chart on the Billboard Hot 100, perform on American Bandstand and Old Grey Whistle Test, back Jonathan Richman, grace the pages of Tiger Beat, and tour with Elvis Costello. The Rubinoos have played and recorded in different incarnations in the intervening decades, but it was a series of writing sessions between Prophet and Dunbar at the latter's Sacramento home that kicked off this new era for the group. From Home was recorded with Chuck Prophet and engineer Paul Q Kolderie (The Pixies' Surfer Rosa, Radiohead's Pablo Honey) at San Francisco's Hyde Street Studios, the same legendary room where the band cut their first single for Beserkley Records in the mid-70s.
The power pop legends have also announced their first live appearance in the U.S. around From Home, an in-store at Amoeba Music in their hometown of Berkeley, California on August 24. More info here: https://www.amoeba.com/live-shows/upcoming/detail-4856/
The Rubinoos had previously shared two new songs off From Home -"Honey From The Honeycombs" and "Do You Remember," which Brooklyn Vegan said "finds the band's signature harmonies still in full bloom." They also sat down with Billboard earlier this summer for a look "Inside The Creative Resurgence of Power Pop Pioneers The Rubinoos": https://bit.ly/2W3JSTm
