WHO: iHeartMedia and ascendant UK podcast studio Novel share the first two episodes of their new podcast The Superhero Complex

WHAT: Host David Weinberg will introduce listeners into the world of real-life Seattle superhero Phoenix Jones, as early acts of local heroism took him from urban legend to national news story in episode one. Through interviews with Phoenix himself, listeners will learn about his incredible supersuit, early interventions with drug dealers and perpetrators of indecent exposure, and his near-constant head-butting with the Seattle Police Department. Weinberg will also take listeners into the wider world of costumed vigilantes, tracing the history of eccentric crime-fighters that served as precedents for Phoenix’s incredible story.

However, there is far more to Phoenix Jones than the comic book-worthy details — a darker side to what, on the surface, seems an inspiring story. In Episode two, Weinberg will tell of how Phoenix’s own crime-fighting team, the Rain City Superheroes, almost all describe him as untrustworthy and “disgraceful.” Through an early interview with Phoenix (real name Ben Fodor), the hero’s insecurities and competitiveness start to be drawn out — as well as some fantastical details: a stellar record as a youth bowler, a career as an MMA fighter, and the momentous moments that inspired him to embark on a journey as a masked crusader.

Told with a balance of in-depth reportage and empathetic character study, “The Superhero Complex” will interrogate not only the complicated rise and fall of Phoenix Jones but society’s fascination with superheroes, and what it means to take the law into your own hands.
