The highly-anticipated six-chapter, twelve-hour documentary film on the history and legacy of the Outlaw country-rock movement of Cosmic Cowboys and Honky Tonk Heroes, THEY CALLED US OUTLAWS, will wrap production this week in Luckenbach Texas. Written, directed and produced by Austin-based filmmaker Eric Geadelmann, produced and edited by Denver’s Kelly Magelky, and executive produced by Grammy Hall of Fame recipient and “Original Outlaw” Jessi Colter and 9-time Grammy winner Ray Benson, in partnership with the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum, the series will feature over 130 interviews with the era’s most iconic figures and those who carry the torch today, including never-before-seen interview footage of outlaw troubadour Jerry Jeff Walker. 

Fittingly, THEY CALLED US OUTLAWS will film its final moments and wrap production during the upcoming 2-day celebration for the 50th anniversary of Jerry Jeff Walker’s industry-changing album, Viva Terlingua!, a timeless collection that captured the developing spirit of the Austin sound and the Outlaw Country movement. On August 18 and 19 in Luckenbach Texas, critically-acclaimed singer/songwriter, Django Walker, Jerry Jeff and Susan Walker’s son, will produce a 2-day 50th anniversary celebration that include appearances / performances by Robert Earl Keen, Dennis Quaid, Jerry Jeff protégés Jack Ingram and Todd Snider and members of the Lost Gonzo Band, “Cosmic Cowboy” icons Michael Martin Murphey and Ray Wylie Hubbard, and more.

“Long before the industry labeled the movement ‘Outlaw,’ the free-wheeling Jerry Jeff Walker epitomized what it meant to be a troubadour.” THEY CALLED US OUTLAWS narrator and executive producer Jack Ingram expressed. “Although signed to a major record label (MCA), the Gypsy Songman, did whatever the hell he wanted, and in doing so he paved the way for so many of us.  It’s not an exaggeration to say that he changed my life …  I think about him every damn day.” 

Kicking off the festivities on Friday is a special preview screening of THEY CALLED US OUTLAWS. A Jerry Jeff Walker short film was created exclusively for the event to celebrate the industry-changing album and highlight the story of Luckenbach’s Hondo Crouch and his friendship with Jerry Jeff, plus previously unseen archival footage and interviews with luminaries of the past and present. Friday night’s SOLD OUT show will also include an evening of “Songs & Stories” in Luckenbach’s famous dancehall, hosted by Django Walker alongside numerous protégés of Jerry Jeff, plus members of the Lost Gonzo Band and several Cosmic Cowboy luminaries. The celebration continues on Saturday with an outdoor dance under the Luckenbach Moon, with a special appearance by Dennis Quaid with many surprises and special guests.

Footage from the 2-day celebration in Luckenbach will be featured in the final chapter of THEY CALLED US OUTLAWS, which details the making of Viva Terlingua!and Luckenbach’s ongoing relevance to the Outlaw Country storyline and efforts to further Jerry Jeff Walker’s legacy. As Rolling Stone editor Chet Flippo observed, “[Viva Terlingua!] was important because it demonstrated that Austin’s relaxed and liberal environment could yield an album of great artistic and commercial merit.”
