Fright Night at the United Palace: Theater to Screen ‘Night of the Living Dead’ Oct 29

Fright Night at the United Palace: Washington Heights Wonder Theater to Screen 'Night of the Living Dead' on October 29

EVENT INCLUDES PRE-SHOW TRIBUTE TO DIRECTOR GEOGRE A. ROMERO, ZOMBIE FACE PAINTING, FILMMAKER PANEL & MORE

On Sunday, October 29th, the United Palace of Cultural Arts in Washington Heights, New York, will host a special screening of the 1968 horror favorite, 'Night of the Living Dead.' The event is part of the ongoing "Movies at the Palace" series taking place at this historic Wonder Theater, which has played host to countless events serving the Washington Heights community since being built in 1930.

The evening will kick off at 3:30 PM with a zombie face painting station, followed by a pre-show event that begins at 4:15 PM and includes a tribute to late 'Night of the Living Dead' director George A. Romero, who passed away in July, a Halloween Costume Parade, and a showing of the 2009 horror short 'Alice Jacobs is Dead.' 'Night of the Living Dead' will begin at 5 PM, followed by a zombie panel moderated by Alex Horwitz (director of Alice Jacobs is Dead) and featuring filmmakers Sandy Jimenez and Kenneth Filmer, who will discuss the film's legacy and lasting influence.

The stunning United Palace, formerly the Loew's 175th Street Theatre, is located at 4140 Broadway at 175th Street in Washington Heights. Designed by acclaimed architect Thomas W. Lamb, the United Palace opened in 1930 as one of the metro area's five Wonder Theaters. In 1969, the United Palace was saved from demolition when Reverend Frederick J. Eikerenkoetter II, better known as Reverend Ike, purchased the building and transformed the theater into a worship space. In 2013 the nonprofit United Palace of Cultural Arts (UPCA) began a series of fundraisers to return movies to the Palace. With the help of UPCA and Washington Heights locals including Lin-Manuel Miranda, the theater has been beautifully preserved and upgraded with a new projector and a new sound system, and now plays host to special events, concerts, film screenings, church services and more.
