Veteran-Written “They Call Me Doc” Honors Fallen Service Member

CreatiVets original featuring Vince Gill, Aaron Lewis + Dan Tyminski played at fallen soldier’s funeral

Navy Corpsman Maxton W. Soviak, who was one of the 13 fallen service members from the recent non-combatant evacuation operations in Kabul, Afghanistan, was laid to rest recently. The song “They Call Me Doc,” a CreatiVets original featuring Vince GillAaron Lewis and Dan Tyminski, was played in honor of the fallen soldier.

“They Call Me Doc” was written through the CreatiVets songwriting program, which pairs combat veterans with songwriters in Nashville to help them learn to use music as a form of therapy. Written with US Navy Veteran, Shaun Bott, a Navy corpsman (medic), who was deployed during Operation Iraqi Freedom and provided medical support for US Marine convoy operations, the emotional track pays tribute to all “Docs” that have served in each war and the hardships they have had to endure.

“This is why we write these songs,” explains CreatiVets co-founder and Executive Director, Richard Casper. “It’s not for a No. 1. It’s not for awards. It’s to honor the sacrifices of our fallen as well as help others through difficult times.”

This is just one of the many songs that have been created through CreatiVets’ songwriting program. Big Machine Label Group and CreatiVets recently announced their campaign to release a new veteran-written track on the 20th of every month in order to raise awareness to the 20 veterans and active-duty members that commit suicide every single day. All partners are aligning to drive attention to the issue, while magnifying real-life stories told through music intended to help combat veterans.

Serving as a connector for opportunities that magnify CreatiVets within the entertainment space, Big Machine Label Group continues to contribute to CreatiVets’ operational initiatives through Scott and Sandi Borchetta’s Music Has Value Fund and through Big Machine Music, which serves as the co-publisher for CreatiVets.
