2025 is off to an exciting start for Canal, who released her debut album in January on Parlophone / Atlantic Records. NPR Music called it "one of the most remarkable debuts in a long time,” while The Guardian named it “a musical promise fulfilled” and NME praised Canal’s “compelling and moving songwriting that manages to depict all of life’s complexities.” The 12-song collection, co-produced by Canal, Eg White (Adele, Sam Smitj), Kevin Farzad (Sure Sure), Ross MacDonald and George Daniel of The 1975, and more, finds the 26-year-old Spanish-American musician embarking on a path that mirrors the unravelling of the human experience. “Life does feel like the sun rising,” she shares of the record’s evocative title. “You come into the world with very little clarity on the way things are – everything's a little hazy and confusing. Then, as you get older, your eyes adjust to what life is; it gets messy and complicated, then spiritual and expansive.”
Written over the course of three years and recorded between London and Los Angeles, the album captures this sentiment as much musically as it does lyrically: Canal’s stunning range is on full display across each of the genre-blurring tracks. The culmination of a lifetime of musical knowledge, experimentation and a fearless approach to her craft, the album marks a new chapter for Canal: a moment of newfound clarity about the artist she wants to be. Earlier this month, Canal made her late night debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, performing “Black Swan” from her new album. The song, a bold statement on identity, won the 2024 Ivor Novello for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. The flawless performance featured a set design by Maris Jones. Canal will tour throughout 2025, including a show at LA’s The Troubador (March 18). In May, Canal will hit the road with Lucius, joining them on tour across the Midwest and East Coast. For tickets and all upcoming dates, please visit https://www.victoriacanal.com/tour.
