Washington Heights Wonder Theater The United Palace To Screen 'WALL-E'; Celebrates New Sound System

On Sunday, January 28th, the United Palace of Cultural Arts will celebrate their brand new surround sound system with a special screening of WALL-E, one of cinema's greatest achievements in audio. The event is part of the ongoing "Movies at the Palace" series hosted at this historic Wonder Theater, which has played host to countless events serving the Washington Heights community since being built in 1930. Pre-show entertainment will include a demonstration of the new state-of-the-art 7.1 surround sound system and a short presentation about the history of sound in movies.

Doors open at 4pm, with the pre-show presentation happening at 4:30pm. The film will begin shortly after at 5pm.

One of the most acclaimed animated films of all-time, 'WALL-E' took home the Oscar in 2008 for Best Animated Picture, and was also nominated for Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. With very little dialogue, sound in turn serves as the narrative for the film, making it the perfect choice to show off the full range of the United Palace's new sound system.

Recently completed, the 7.1 surround sound system is designed to ensure proper audio coverage for all of the United Palace. First row or last, orchestra or balcony. This new system includes 46 JBL 9350 Cinema Loudspeakers, the highest power / widest coverage cinema surround speaker in the JBL portfolio. In addition, each one of the 46 speakers has a dedicated channel of amplification from Crown DCI-N amplifiers. The 7.1 audio completes the cinematic modernization of the 88 year-old theatre, complementing the state-of-the-art DCP projector that was donated by Broadway superstar Lin-Manuel Miranda in 2016.

"The goal was to provide the most modern and flexible sound system available at a venue that can seat over 3000 guests," said Gregg Paliotta, president of New York City-based Digital Media Systems, which oversaw the installation. "The cinema sound system achieves exactly what it was designed to do - creating a premiere-worthy movie theatre."

The stunning United Palace, formerly the Loew's 175th Street Theatre, is located at 4140 Broadway at 175th Street in Washington Heights. Designed by acclaimed architect Thomas W. Lamb, the United Palace opened in 1930 as one of the metro area's five Wonder Theaters. In 2013 the nonprofit United Palace of Cultural Arts (UPCA) began a series of fundraisers to return movies to the Palace. With the help of UPCA and Washington Heights locals including Lin-Manuel Miranda, the theater has been beautifully preserved and upgraded, and now plays host to special events, concerts, film screenings, church services and more.
