Waylon Payne, whose ‘Blue Eyes, The Harlot, The Queer, The Pusher & Me’ album was deemed one of 2020’s best by top music critics, is proof that nobody is exempt from experiencing life’s most devastating moments. Payne mourns one of the most difficult times in his storied life, the death of his mother, GRAMMY-winning country artist Sammi Smith (“Help Me Make It Through The Night”), in his new song “7:28,” available everywhere today (9.24) via Carnival Recording Company/EMPIRE.

Co-written by Payne alongside Wade Bowen and Angaleena Presley, “7:28” is the first song from ’The Lost Act,’ the next chapter of the ‘Blue Eyes, The Harlot, The Queer, The Pusher & Me’ story, out October 15th. The heart-wrenching track details how humans process bad news, the abruptness of death and how expecting things to stay the same forever can leave us feeling foolish when they do in fact change.
“I received the phone call that my momma had died at 7:28 am,” says Payne. "Curious, because I was also born at 7:28 pm many years ago. I wrote this song with my friends Wade Bowen and Angaleena Presley about the devastating moments that sometimes happen in life. I’m extremely proud of this one, and I hope you enjoy it."
Payne made several appearances at AmericanaFest in Nashville this week, including a set at The Basement East on Wednesday (9.22), The Bobby Hotel’s Lone Star Shindig yesterday (9.23) afternoon and a stellar showcase at EXIT/IN just hours ago.
