January 18, 2022 -- East London R&B singer Yazmin Lacey has shared new single “Late Night People” from her long-awaited debut album Voice Notes, out March 3 (Own Your Own Records/Believe). Deemed “one of the UK’s most distinctive singer-songwriters” in The Guardian’s 2023 Arts preview, Lacey has released three highly regarded EPs and performed a COLORS session before gearing up for her debut LP. Voice Notes was written by Lacey over the course of two years and executive produced by Dave Okumu (The Invisible, Jessie Ware, Arlo Parks, Ibeyi).  Easy to get lost in, it’s a beautifully personal account that explores Lacey’s lived experiences and bringing life and color to her own voice notes journaled on her phone. What started as quick notes, ideas and reminders became the inception of lyrics and full songs.

“Late Night People” follows previous Voice Notes singles “Pieces” and "Bad Company,” tracks that have been covered by The Guardian, BBC, OkayPlayer, NME and Cool Hunting.

Written for “Those needing a space to let go, pleasure seekers, dreamers, creators and magic makers”, “Late Night People” contains the feel-good energy of nightlife, an ode to “people that come alive at night.” Yazmin explains, “I’ve always been inspired by what goes on when the rest of the world is sleeping. Sometimes, people only associate nightlife with debauchery, which has its place, but it’s also much more”.

Voice Notes begins with a short intro track titled “Flylo Tweet,” and finds Lacey musing on a post she saw from Flying Lotus about creativity. The 14-track Voice Notes goes on to explore a musical space somewhere between Brainfeeder, the late ‘90s Soulquarians experimentalism that brought r&b into thrilling new realms as well as everything from dub and hip hop to trip hop. Lacey delivers her intimate vocals over unhurried songs that are dedicated to searching for, and staying in, the deepest of grooves.

Yazmin Lacey didn’t set out to be a singer. Born and raised in Manor Park, East London, she relocated to Nottingham whilst working for a children's charity and initially only considered making music as a way of having fun with friends. However, a chance encounter led to her earning a place on Future Bubblers - Gilles Peterson’s development programme devoted to discovering and nurturing fresh UK talent - and enthused by the experience, Lacey recorded some songs in her living room. In 2017 she self-released her debut EP, Black Moon. The When The Sun Dips 90 Degrees EP followed in 2018. The 2020 Morning Matters EP’s title track has clocked up over 14 million plays on Spotify.

Lacey will play a sold-out headline show at London’s St Pancras Old Church on March 31 and will perform in the U.S. in March including at SXSW. Dates will be announced shortly.
