Algiers have announced that they will bring their "spiritual, political, confrontational" (Rolling Stone) blend of political, post punk on the road for a series of headlining concerts in support of their self-titled debut album on Matador Records, out June 2. These shows will follow a run of dates opening for Interpol in May, and will include stops in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and more.
A trio of émigrés of the American Deep South, now split between New York and London, Algiers imbues neo-modernist hymns with caustic social sentiment and explosive noise.
Comprised of singer/guitarist Franklin James Fisher, guitarist Lee Tesche, and bassist Ryan Mahan, the band has gotten early attention from Rolling Stone ("the Death Grips of Gospel"), Stereogum ("revolutionary music in the truest sense of the word"), Self-Titled ("feels like a full-on exorcism") and more.
Watch Algiers' video for the "astonishing" (The Times UK) "Irony. Utility. Pretext.":
Praise for Algiers:
"To grapple with the eleven songs on 'Algiers' is to wrestle angels, face down demons and rebel against authority -- this is revolutionary music in the truest sense of the word. It demands action. It requires penance. It destroys expectations." -- Stereogum
"Intense...right on the beat of the current cultural climate." -- Vice Noisey
"An exhilarating blend of electro and multi-tracked melodies that feels like a full-on exorcism." -- Self-Titled
"Mesmerizing and really sucks you in with its weird power." -- The Wire (Byron Coley)
"An electric, funereal response to the sins of the twentieth century." -- Impose Magazine
"Evokes the best of the bleak, from Vangelis to Joy Division." -- Flood Magazine
"Sounds like the Death Grips of gospel torching the South's dark underbelly...the results are spiritual, political and confrontational." -- Rolling Stone
"Fisher, one of the most powerfully guttural vocalists in rock today, brings gospel authority to the music's drama. The final product is harrowing but spellbinding." -- SPIN
