Today, Amythyst Kiah releases “Sugar,” a powerfully defiant rendition of Tori Amos’ standard. Amos – one of Kiah’s musical mentors – has been a driving force behind her music. Growing up listening to the 90s alt-rock Nirvana and Amos ignited her passion for music and hard-hitting, confessional songwriting. With “Sugar,” Kiah explores another part of her musical make up beyond the roots influences that have earned her acclaim.

When I was 15, I fell in love with Tori Amos' music. I was constantly playing her first five albums on repeat and even learned some of the songs. She inspired me to want to write songs - I wanted to be a guitar-playing version of her,” shares Kiah. “She manages to take very specific, very personal things that happened to her and turn them into songs that the listener can relate to and feel, even without having had that specific experience. Her use of metaphor in her storytelling, her distinctive voice and piano playing, was just so powerful and different than anything I had ever heard before. Her live version of 'Sugar' is one of my favorite recordings, so I hope I did the song justice!

Kiah – a Grammy-nominated songwriter – was recently featured in Amazon Music’s For Love & Country Documentary. She was praised by Vanity Fair as one of the “Black women carving a hallowed space in Opry’s pantheon” and praised by Guitar Player as a “fantastic fingerpicker, dynamo singer and profound songwriter [who] defies all sorts of stereotypes.” Kiah released her album Wary + Strange via Rounder Records in 2021, earning glowing features and reviews with The New York TimesNPR Morning EditionPitchfork, and Rolling Stone, plus performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and CBS This Morning: Saturday. The album is currently nominated for Album of the Year at this year’s Folk Alliance International.

Kiah is on the road this May with The Who, and - earlier this week - announced she’ll be touring with CAM this year. Throughout the next few months, Kiah will headline a European tour and perform with Old Crow Medicine ShowLeAnn Rimes, Shovels & Rope and more. Complete routing available below and here.
