Anat Cohen Tentet Premieres Grammy-Nominated Triple Helix In Los Angeles On April 19 At Disney Hall

Co-Headline With Maria Schneider Orchestra

Clarinetist Anat Cohen and her carefully curated Tentet will perform their 2019 Grammy-nominated album Triple Helix in Los Angeles for the first time, at the Walt Disney Concert Hall on April 19. The centerpiece of Triple Helix, a three-movement suite, was composed by Anat’s longtime collaborator Oded Lev-Ari and was commissioned by New York’s Carnegie Hall and Chicago’s Symphony Center. This performance will be under the direction of Lev-Ari, and is a co-bill with the Maria Schneider Orchestra.

Triple Helix - released this past summer - was deemed “a work of considerable expressive reach” by the Chicago Tribute, and JazzTimes deemed Anat at her most “fresh, sophisticated and daring.” Musically it’s the most ambitious project either Anat or Oded has ever undertaken, swinging from solo clarinet and classically-inspired moments, to Zappa-esque rock, free jazz and Middle Eastern music. It was nominated for a Best Large Jazz Ensemble GRAMMY and included on NPR’s 2019 Jazz Critics Poll of best releases. Cohen has topped DownBeat’s Critics Poll for her instrument every year this decade, from 2010-2019. Downbeat deemed the project “arguably a career high” in a recent cover story.

Anat and Oded recently spoke to WBGO about the project, with the Tentet performed on Sirius Real Jazz and WNYC’s Soundcheck. The Anat Cohen Tentet has grown from workshops at Shapeshifter Lab in Brooklyn to multi-night runs of rousing club experiences at the Jazz Standard in Manhattan as well as high-profile engagements at the Newport, Monterey and SFJazz Festivals.

The Tentet, a vibrant mix of ace New York players, bring a wealth of color to the new work, which defies easy genre categorizations, and includes Nadje Noordhuis and Nick Finzer (brass), Owen Browder (baritone sax), James Shipp (vibraphone and percussion), Christopher Hoffman (cello), Vitor Gonçalves (piano and accordion), Sheryl Bailey (guitar), Tal Mashiach (bass), and Anthony Pinciotti (drums).
