The Art Students League announces its annual metal sculpture exhibit -- Of A Fourth Dimension -- opening Feb 25 in Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery

NEW YORK CITY, NY (Monday, February 11, 2019) – From February 25 to March 2, 2019, New York Visual Artists Cliff Dufton, Hak Sul Lee, Dana Parlier, Anne Stanner and Natsuki Takauji, will present “Of A Fourth Dimension,” a metal sculpture exhibit showcasing the work of more than 40 New-York– based artists also known as the “ASL Metal Sculpture Artists.” Every week, the ASL Metal Sculpture Artists meet their mentors at the Art Students League of New York and develop their art in the metal studio. “Our group is very diversified. We come from all over the world. We get to share our cultures and aesthetics. We inspire each other,” says Val Brochard, one of the artists.

The title of this exhibit, “Of A Fourth Dimension” is a reflection on the transformation of metal in the hands of the artists. Sculptures are generated from metal sheets, rods, scraps and found objects. The metal may be cut, heated, forged, twisted, welded, grinded, or even chemically treated. Some artists choose to mix other media like wood or ceramic to create their sculpture.

Opening reception is Monday, February 25, 2019, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., at The Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery, second floor of The Art Students League of New York (see details below).

About the Mentors

Cliff Dufton

A master metal sculptor, Cliff Dufton is also a professional blacksmith and a wood and metal worker. Mr. Dufton grew up partly in Indonesia where he went to the Jakarta International School, a formative time for the future artist. He later studied art and art history in Florida. He learned his metalwork and welding craft at the Apex Technical School in New York, graduating at the top of his class. Known as a problem solver who continuously experiments with shapes, textures and the patterns heat may generate, Mr. Dufton transforms and create from scrap metal, unusual alloys, old tools, steel bars, or found objects. Every weekday morning, Mr. Dufton mentors emerging artists at The Art Students League of NY where he teaches Metal Sculpture. He also conducts workshops around the city in various institutions including Columbia University.

Hak Sul Lee

Korea-born artist Hak Sul Lee studied at Kwandong University in Korea and Queens College, CUNY, in New York where he majored in art history. Mr. Lee is represented by 798 Art Zone in Beijing. Mr. Lee started as a figurative sculptor. In recent years, he has been producing kinetic sculptures and interactive installations. Mr. Lee’s public art has been seen at the Riverside Park South in Manhattan, NY, relating directly to the city, as he explains: “The theme of ‘flux’ suits New York City well, with its distinctive history as a melting pot that receives diverse populations and their perspectives. My sculptures are meant to embody the city and the dreams of people moving forward on their own terms. The spherical forms incorporate aspects of a ship, an airplane, a fish, a bird... These reflect the city’s half-mechanical, half- organic nature where people’s lives move along one wind gust at a time.” On weekends, Mr. Lee mentors emerging artists at The Art Students League of NY where he teaches Metal Sculpture.

Dana Parlier

Dana Parlier is a New York visual artist who sculpts in a variety of media, including welded steel, bronze, clay, and plaster. In his early years, Mr. Parlier studied the figure intensively. His work encompasses a wide mix of styles including abstract compositions and what he describes as "anatomical deviations" to human figures combined with geometric forms. Mr. Parlier’s public art can be seen across the U.S., from the campus of Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, to the streets of Madison City, IA in the “River City Sculptures on Parade,” to “Sculpture Walk” in Sioux Falls, SD and the galleries of New York City. Mr. Parlier was recently featured as one of the cutting-edge names in “Art Week NYC” at Tribeca’s Saphira & Ventura Gallery. Four afternoons a week, Mr. Parlier mentors emerging artists at The Art Students League of NY where he teaches Metal Sculpture. Mr. Parlier holds an MFA.

Anne Stanner

A native New York visual artist, Anne Stanner splits her time between New York City and the Hudson Valley. She sculpts various media including clay, wax and metal. Her outdoor public art has been featured at the Kingston Sculpture Biennial, Kingston, NY, Rockland Community College, Suffern, NY, Rockaway Beach Park, Queens, NY and in the Riverside Park South, NYC. Her smaller work has been showcased at various NYC galleries including the Noho M55 Gallery, the Prince Street Gallery, the George Billis Gallery and the Ernest Rubenstein Gallery, and at public venues such as the Godwin-Ternbach Museum at Queens College, The City College of New York and branches of the New York City Public Library — Ottendorfer and Tompkins Square—in the East Village. Ms. Stanner is the recipient of several awards from the Salmagandi Club and The Art Students League of New York. She recently received the Alumni Career Achievement Award from the City College of New York. Ms. Stanner holds an MFA in Art & Sculpture from The City College of New York.

For more than a decade, Ms. Stanner has been President of the Sculptors Alliance, a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to furthering the understanding and expression of sculpture through exhibitions, workshops and other activities, with a focus on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Natsuki Takauji

Natsuki Takauji is a Japan-born visual artist living and working in New York City. Ms. Takauji moved to New York in 2008 and her sculptures and paintings have since been exhibited around the city and abroad, notably at The Noho M55 Gallery, NYC, The Affordable Art Fair, NYC and Palazzo Mora at the 2018 Venice Biennale (Italy). Her work has received several awards and is held in private collections across the U.S. In 2015, MS. Takauji exhibited “Window,” her first large-scale public sculpture for the Riverside Park South in Manhattan, NY. She has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and other publications. She is currently working on her second public sculpture “Window II” that will be installed in Spring 2019, in Rye Town Park, Rye, NY. Twice a week, she mentors emerging artists at The Art Students League of NY where she teaches Metal Sculpture.

A legendary community of artists, the Art Students League of New York (ASL) was founded by artists in 1875 and has been instrumental in shaping America’s legacy in the fine arts. Yes, Bourgeois, Hirschfeld, Nevelson, O’Keeffe, Pollock, Rockwell, Rothko, and recently departed Rosenquist have practiced their art here, along with numerous other prominent artists.
