Brooklyn Bowl's Annual Musical Rosh Hashanah Services Set For September 22nd and September 23rd
Live Performances From Yula Be’eri, Jeremiah Lockwood, John Bollinger, And More
Presented By The Friday Night Jam, Because Jewish And Shalom Y’all Jams

Wednesday, August 27th: Today, Brooklyn Bowl announces its 14th annual musical Rosh Hashanah services. Set to take place at 7:30 pm on Monday, September 22nd and 10:00 am on Tuesday, September 23rd, both musically driven services will feature Rabbi Daniel Brenner with musical director Jeremiah Lockwood, Antibalas' Jordan McLean, Antibalas’ Timothy Allen, drummer John Bollinger, saxophonist Stuart Bogie (known for his work with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, Arcade Fire, and TV on the Radio), and Yula Berri on vocals and bass.
Internationally renowned teacher Jane Tuv will also lead a guided meditation at each event. There will also be Torah reading and procession led by Rabbi Brenner, as well as prayer, shofar blowing, and meditation. All proceeds will support the non-profit organization Shalom Y'all Jams, which works to organize holiday services at non-traditional locations.
“We have said for years that Brooklyn Bowl is our sanctuary, clubhouse, church and synagogue, so it only makes sense that it has grown into the spiritual home for our musically inclined Rosh Hashanah services over the years,” says Relix’s Editor-in-Chief Mike Greenhaus. “Especially at a time when so many of us have been apart from our friends and family due to the pandemic, we hope that our suite of traditional-but-open-minded-and-inclusive services will allow us to connect with each other as we ‘begin again’ at the start of this new year,”
“In a world where more and more is artificial, this new year, we seek out the authentic,” says Rabbi Brenner. “Our celebration returns to the purity of the raw, sustained, and staccato sounds of the shofar and to the haunting melodies accumulated over the three-thousand-year journey of the Jewish people. We will return to the past once again in order to start a new year with renewed spirits.”
“Selichos/Transformation brings together a lot of the passions that have been driving me for the last decade or so,” says Jeremiah Lockwood. “I started doing research about music in the Hasidic community when I was working on my dissertation and book project, and found that there was an incredible underground community of artists reviving century-old styles of cantorial music. Working with these artists, I found a combination of non-conformity, obsession with the music of the gramophone era, and burning creativity. It resonated for me with my work with The Sway Machinery, and also reminded me of blues revivalists and the free Jazz music scene. This new piece draws together two of my favorite singers, Yoel Kohn and Riki Rose, to sing music that I've created for them. It's new and very old at the same time, and I'm thrilled to share it with the world.”

These services followed the debut of “Selichos/Transformation,” a new work by Lockwood. Rooted in the cantorial tradition yet infused with bold contemporary influences, the work serves as a powerful prelude to the High Holiday season. Commissioned by the Center for New Jewish Culture, the piece is written for two voices and chamber orchestra, conducted by Alan Pierson and performed by Riki Rose and Yoel Kohn.
In past years, Brooklyn Bowl’s Rosh Hashanah services have featured members of Darkside, Dr. Dog, Real Estate, Soulive, Vampire Weekend, and Taper’s Choice. This year’s festivities will feature appearances by Goose cofounder and Houseplant drummer Ben Atkind, Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band fiddler Kenny Kosek, Eggy guitarist Jake Brownstein, Dr. Dog’s Eric Slick, Jackson Browne collaborator Leslie Mendelson, and the Afrobeat collective Armo, which features revolving members of the Daptone Records family. Additional guests will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
Alongside the Musical Celebration of Rosh Hashanah at Brooklyn Bowl, The Friday Night Jam will hold Yom Kippur services at the Cutting Room on Wednesday, October 1st, at 7:00 pm and Tuesday, October 2nd, at 10:00 am.

Rabbi Daniel Brenner, named by Newsweek Magazine as one of America's most influential rabbis, has played key roles in some of the most creative organizations in the religious world, including CLAL-the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership, Auburn Seminary, Birthright Israel, and Moving Traditions, where he currently serves as the chief of education. Brenner's latest Jewish cultural arts project, Klezmer Aerobics, was featured as a select pick in the Weekend Arts section of The New York Times.
ABOUT JEREMIAH LOCKWOOD
Jeremiah Lockwood--music director, composer, singer, guitarist--is a scholar and musician. His work engages with issues arising from peering into the archive and imagining the power of “lost” forms of expression to articulate keenly felt needs in the present. Jeremiah is currently a Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies. His first book, Golden Ages: Hasidic Singers and Cantorial Revival in the Digital Era, will be published by University of California Press in February of 2024. 2024 will also see the release of a suite of albums of new cantorial revivalist music produced by Jeremiah, including a new album from The Sway Machinery! Jeremiah has played around the world as leader of The Sway Machinery and is currently developing a new blues duo, Gordon Lockwood, with drummer Ricky Gordon.
