Today (10.11), PLATINUM-selling country artist Canaan Smith announces his third studio record, Chickahominy, due January 24, 2025. Widely known for his major label debut, Bronco, and radio smash “Love You Like That” (160M streams), the now independent artist is marking a new chapter with his most fearless songwriting to date.
Chickahominy, titled after the river he grew up on in Virginia, finds Smith embracing his journey of self-discovery as he transitions from road warrior to settled husband and father, and showcasing his gifted storytelling ability with songs that explore the intersection of life’s clever lies and ugly truths.
“It’s been a new season for me as a songwriter,” says Smith. “I find myself highlighting struggle and redemption; looking more inward. The whole idea for recording a new album was based on a comment Anthony Olympia made after we wrote ‘Bad News.’ He called me on my way home and told me if I ever wanted to bring a producer on board, he’d love the chance to work together. Up until that moment, I had no plans for what was next. 3 weeks later, we were in the studio, and Chickahominy was officially underway. I can’t thank Anthony enough for believing in me and taking the initiative he did. I feel like everything’s led to this moment.”
Smith teases the upcoming album with two new songs — “Green” and “Bread And Honey” — produced by Anthony Olympia (Everette, Kendell Marvel), available now.
Written by Smith alongside Drew Kennedy (Wade Bowen, Nate Smith, Patrick Droney) “Green” is a stomp-and-holler fit for a tent revival. Harking back to old-time Appalachian folklore, “Green” is an 11th hour redemption fable of a church-going weed farmer who is running from the DEA, when a lightning strike burns it all down just before he’s caught.
Written by Smith and Autumn Marie Buysse (Dasha, Breland), “Bread And Honey” shines light on the dark nature of vices and their destructive tendencies. Smith narrates a story of how a gambling addiction unravels the threads of marriage.
