Multi Latin Grammy® And Grammy® Winner Carlos Vives Donates His Latest Book, Cumbiana: Relatos De Un Mundo Perdido, To Schools Supported By The Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation®

Multi Latin GRAMMY® and GRAMMY® winner, Carlos Vives took part in a virtual event, speaking with more than 75 students from schools across the U.S., Mexico and Puerto Rico about his latest book, Cumbiana: Relatos De Un Mundo Perdido. During the event, Vives talked about the origins of cumbia, described his experiences writing the book, and officially presented it to the schools.

In the book, Vives traces the origins of cumbia through a magical journey that interweaves the artist’s memories with historical facts. It is a gateway to reconstructing the development of an amphibious nation that combined European and African cultures to find its destiny in the Americas, leaving a historic musical legacy.

The schools participating in the meeting and receiving book donations were Los Angeles High School and Huntington Park High School in Los Angeles; SLAM in Miami, Jovita Idár Elementary (an Acero school) in Chicago; the Escuela Especializada de Bellas Artes in Yauco, Puerto Rico; and Escuela Secundaria 293 Enrique Beltrán in Mexico City.

"We took advantage of the current situation and our wonderful ability to imagine a voyage together to the lost world of Cumbiana,” Vives said.

Vives has been a generous ally of the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation®since it was launched six years ago. In 2018, he joined the organization to create the Carlos Vives Scholarship, which gave Nicolle Horbath, a voice student, the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree in Songwriting and Composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston. She was selected by the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation Scholarship Committee from a highly competitive group of hundreds of applicants from across the Americas and the Iberian Peninsula.
