Acclaimed bassist/vocalist Casey Abrams' latest album 'Put A Spell On You' (Chesky Record) takes funk-fueled, contemporary jazz to an entirely new level -- delivering his highest chart debut -- landing at #3 on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz Albums Chart and #5 on Billboard's overall Jazz Albums.
This millennial's 13-track collection is a compelling combination of originals and ingenious covers, showcasing Abram's vibrant live energy, raw bluesy vocals, and musical prowess. Overflowing with Tenacious D-inspired rough-around-the-edges scat, enchanting upright bass-driven rhythms, and down-right-dirty saxophone riffs, Abram's latest album is a lush, multi-dimensional masterpiece.
Recorded at a decommissioned church in Brooklyn (The Hirsch Center) during a two-day marathon session, he was joined by the members of his trio--Jacob Scesney [saxophone, cajon] and Taylor Tesler [guitar, vocals] and David Chesky in the producer's chair.
"The church was amazing," Abrams said. "There was a natural reverb that you can't get digitally. We recorded using this mannequin with microphones in it. You're singing to this thing like an audience member and getting real stereoscopic sound. There's a difference here. The first album was super clean. As time progressed, my sound has gotten more live and dirty. It's more like you're sitting in my living room now. It's very spontaneous and rugged. That's the beauty of this.".
Following his time on American Idol, Abrams spent the last year touring internationally as part of the renowned collective Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox between launching his own nine-piece "funk orchestra" via select FunkHaus gigs. Abrams and his trio will continue their tour into April, with shows in New York City (3.27), Atlanta (4.3), Nashville (4.4), more. A link to the complete routing here.
