Folk City Includes: Lead Belly's 12-String Guitar, Bob Dylan's Handwritten Manuscript, Letters From Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger
"D'Addario is proud to broaden access to the Folk City Exhibit to students, teachers and families so they can learn more about how people passionately shared their interpretation of the turbulent 1960s through music." -John D'Addario, Jr. (D'Addario Vice Chairman)
The D'Addario Foundation, a nonprofit solely funded by the world's largest maker of instrument strings based in Long Island, provided a $10,000 grant to support education and family programs tied to Folk City: New York and the American Folk Music Revival. The major multi-media exhibit hosted by the Museum of the City of the New York from June 17th-November 29th includes Lead Belly's 12-string guitar, Odetta's iconic guitar "Baby," a handwritten manuscript of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind," handwritten letters by Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, as well as other artifacts to trace the roots of the folk revival, its growth in New York, its major players, and its impact on American politics and culture during the tumultuous 1960s.
Funding from the D'Addario Foundation will enable the Schwarz Center for the Arts to host K-12 school field trips for students to experience the exhibit and also enable Folk City's Family Programs to provide free exhibit tours, workshops and performances for the general public, as well as families from New York's homeless shelters. Both programs are expected to serve 2,000 students and teachers, the majority from under-resourced public schools.
*Folk City Field Trips: The 90-minute field trips are based on classroom learning standards, designed for K-12 school groups, and include hands-on projects to encourage children to connect the city's past with their own experiences. More here.
*Folk City Family Programs: These programs provide free exhibit tours on weekends and school holidays with hands-on art workshops and live performances. Family Programs is also partnering with NYC Department of Homeless Services to serve families from New York's homeless shelters. More here.
For over 30 years, D'Addario has donated $10 million to The D'Addario Foundation to support over +250 music education programs worldwide including NYC's 92nd Street Y, Manhattan School of Music, Midori and Friends, Education Through Music and more. More info here.
