Derik Hultquist’s Psychedelic Pop Debut, Southern Iron, Out Now On Carnival/Thirty Tigers

East Tennessee singer-songwriter Derik Hultquist's debut album, 'Southern Iron,' bows today, June 17, via Carnival/Thirty Tigers. Produced by Frank Liddell (Brandi Carlile, Aubrie Sellers, Miranda Lambert) and Eric Masse (Mikky Ekko, Rayland Baxter, Andrew Combs), 'Southern Iron' is 12 tracks of psychedelic roots-rock disguised as uplifting pop that is as infectious as it is inspiring: After losing two family members to cancer last year and currently watching his father battle the disease, Hultquist took to writing to find hope.

"'Southern Iron' represents the triumph of wills that have given me strength in the face of life's unanswerable questions," Derik says of the album's title, which comes from a gym his father owned in Tallahassee, FL. "It seemed an appropriate title for a man who is most assuredly the strongest person I have ever known. This album is dedicated to him, my grandmother, my family and those fighting the good fight with the greatest appreciation and endless love."

Rayland Baxter and Matthew Logan Vasquez appear as guest vocalists throughout a record inspired as much by neo-soul and post-punk as traditional country, which creates a sound that's confronting yet instantly familiar, reflective yet lively.
