ABOUT EPISODE #5

Filmmaker Ambar Navarro guides viewers through how a young, cross-generational and multi-genre LatinX community was born out of a desire for representation and expression in ways they had not seen before.

Guided by community advocate Doris Anahi Muñoz and featuring interviews with Neon Indian, Inner Wave, Danie, Avalon Lurks, musician Nacho Cano (Harmless), makeup artist Selena Ruiz and Órale Magazine founder Michael Martinez, Navarro’s film underscores how this community built itself from the ground up.

Highlights include a discussion around how the Mexican/American experience informs musical decisions, how the cultural cross-pollination of bands inspires the artists’ work, collaboration with local LatinX-owned spaces like True Sounds and references to Chicano style onstage.

Of the film filmmaker Ambar Navarro says: "The LatinX music scene is the reason I feel proud to be Mexican-American. From an early age all my idols were British men, and the only reference of anything related to my culture was what I saw on TV. I grew up listening to The Clash and The Cure. It wasn't until I was shown the Mexican-Spanish musician, Alaska y Los Pegamoides where I saw weirdo Mexican punks that made me realize of course I was connected to this too. The current Indie scene are all people in my age group with similar backgrounds! I think it's important to tell their stories because it's something I wish I had in high school when Selena was the main reference. I wish there had been more people to look up to."

ABOUT EPISODE #6

Filmmaker Fredgy Noël’s film takes viewers through New York City’s tight knit music community, formed by LGBTQ+, Black and Brown youth, born out of a desire for representation and expression in ways they had not seen before from Cakes Da Killa, Khalif, Joey Labeija, Rahel and Kimberly Drew.

Highlights include the discussion of iconic NYC venues like Limelight & Area, how venues such as Glasslands and 285 Kent provided a safe space for expression and how the LGBTQ+ and Black alternative music scene creates community in the face of a constantly changing city . "My intention was to make a film that shows New York in the same image that I see it in––with the people who inspire me and in the spaces that they take up,” says filmmaker Fredgy Noël.

“I knew I could tell their stories authentically and with integrity because in many ways it’s my story too. The NY Alt Underground scene revolves around this idea of isolation and what I thought was really special about working with this group of artists was seeing how connected they all were, despite their differences. I hope that if someone watches this film––wherever they may be––if they feel out of place or alone, that they can watch and know that they have a community somewhere––whether it’s creating it for themselves or coming here to find it."

This year’s series showcased the Women in Punk and Queer Indie Scenes Along With Tech Afrique NYC’s Afrohouse scene, DIY and Underground Alternative Scenes from its emerging filmmakers and shined a light on the importance of these music communities — and the impact they have on the musicians who will be shaping the next generation.

ABOUT DR. MARTENS

www.drmartens.com

The first pair of Dr. Martens boots rolled off the production line on the 1st April 1960. With its trademark yellow stitch, grooved sole and heel-loop, it was a boot for workers, initially worn by postmen and policemen; comfortable, durable and lightweight in comparison to its competitors at the time.

Throughout Dr. Martens history, the brand has been adopted and subverted by diverse individuals, musicians, youth cultures and tribes. These are the people who stand out from the crowd and their journey of self-expression has always been accompanied by a pair of DM’s.

The simple silhouette allows people to customize each pair; whilst on a utilitarian level their famous durability and comfort make them ideal footwear for the world of gigs and street fashion. On an emotional level, they are a flag of attitude and empowerment.

The Northamptonshire factory where it all began still exists to this day, in the village of Wollaston. A specific range of ‘Made In England’ products are manufactured here by a small, close-knit team of people schooled in traditional shoe-making and a process that hasn’t changed since our first pair six decades ago.
