Grateful Dead Legend Phil Lesh Receives Ceremonial Key to the Village of Port Chester, NY

Port Chester, New York: Port Chester Trustee and Deputy Mayor Luis Marino last night presented Grateful Dead legend and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Phil Lesh with a ceremonial “Key to the Village of Port Chester” at the Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band Halloween concert. The presentation of the Key to the Village is a throwback to the days of medieval “walled” villages, which were guarded by day and locked at night, where possession of such a key symbolized the freedom of the recipient to enter and leave at will as a trusted friend of the Village.
Phil Lesh has had a strong connection to the Village of Port Chester from the moment he first set foot onstage at The Capitol Theatre. A founding member of the Grateful Dead, Lesh initially performed at The Capitol Theatre on March 20, 1970, playing 17 shows in 11 months in 1970-71. The band’s run of shows at The Cap in February of 1971 remains iconic and indelible for fans. Recordings of these shows at The Cap have circulated among fans for decades, and have become a collector’s item for “Deadheads.” Since the venue reopened in 2012, Lesh has performed at The Cap frequently with Phil Lesh & Friends, making an incredible 70 appearances at the venue.
Phil Lesh received the Key to the Village not just for his triumphs in the music industry, but also for his promotion of unity, community, and self-expression in his music and his actions. An outspoken advocate for organ donor programs, Lesh makes it a point to promote organ donor awareness at his concerts at The Capitol Theatre.
