Since officially launching their collaboration last month, GRRL x Made of Oak has delivered “an unanticipated yet delightful collision of worlds…bridging the gap between cerebral meticulously crafted techno and playful synth pop” (PAPER Magazine). The brand new duo of producer, DJ and NTS affiliate James Mapley-Brittle (GRRL) and Sylvan Esso’s Nick Sanborn (Made of Oak) successfully channeled a mutual obsession with peak-hour club music into a pair of singles perfect for a Danny Boyle film or early morning at Berghain, but today they take their sound a step further. Out now on Psychic Hotline, “Interference” is the project’s third and most kinetic, unrestrained offering thus far. Alongside another heady visual from Eric Timothy Carlson and Aaron Anderson - the Bon Iver, Boys Noize and Leon Vynehall collaborators who created the mind-altering world of art that surrounds GRRL x Made of Oak - “Interference” fuses and multiplies musical motifs from the previously shared “Inertia” and “Tempest,” resulting in an exponential rush of energy.

With a beat that bangs harder than anything they have revealed yet, “Interference” amplifies GRRL x Made of Oak’s “trance-tinged techno” (Mixmag), and serves as the latest preview of something much bigger still left to come. After playing their first live shows at NYC’s Pioneer Works and LA’s Gold Diggers over the past few weeks, the duo will soon return to their native Durham, NC for the upcoming Slingshot Festival, taking place October 7th-9th. As mainstays of the city’s eclectic dance scene, James Mapley-Brittle and Nick Sanborn have crossed paths at many of the same parties over the years - and recorded their new music at Betty’s studio in Chapel Hill - but this will mark their first official, hometown performance together.
GRRL x Made of Oak’s Slingshot set will be presented by Boiler Room, and on October 15th, the duo will also play the second annual Psychic Hotline Block Party. At Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC, the 2022 edition of event will celebrate a community of like-minded artists united by the Sylvan Esso-founded record label, Psychic Hotline, with the rest of the lineup featuring The A's, Arooj Aftab, Bartees Strange, Hand Habits, Indigo De Souza, Joe Rainey, Joe Westerlund, Lambchop and more.
