Henry Jamison Sculpts Philosophy, Impressionism, and Literary Lineage into "Stunning" Folk-Pop Debut

‘The Wilds,’ the debut album from Vermont’s “millennial transcendentalist” singer-songwriter Henry Jamison, is out today via Akira Records. From the airy vocals, momentum-building acoustic guitars, and playful mythological references of “Sunlit Juice” to the sparse and melancholic synths of “The Last Time I Saw Adrianne,” the collection pairs lyrics “written like the Great American Novel” (Billboard) with a bright Leonard Cohen-meets-James Blake folk-pop sound.

Recorded in a remote cabin outside Burlington, Vermont, ‘The Wilds’’ “visionary songwriting” (Ladygunn) originated in Henry’s desire to sculpt the works of impressionist masters like Cézanne, artists like Rodin, and intellectuals like Rilke and Nietzsche into “musical miniature” meditations on 21st century life. In the legacy of his familial forebears- the famed Civil War songwriter George Frederick Root, a classical composer, English professor, and even the 14th Century poet John Gower, a trusted friend of Chaucer’s- Henry’s songs tell eternally relatable tales of romance and desire though old-world metaphors and fresh, unexpected juxtapositions.

The tracks are “love songs, or about relationships, but mostly as vehicles for discovering how to relate to another person, to Nature and to our swerving culture” says Jamison. “'Millennial transcendentalism' is close enough on this record, but if my aims are in any philosophical tradition, I think they're more along the lines of Romanticism, i.e. glimpsing the eternal in the particular, and overcoming dualism (objectification) through poetry.”

Since releasing his debut single “Real Peach” in 2016, Henry’s been streamed more than 30M+ times on Spotify, and has been lauded by the likes of American Songwriter, Vice NOISEY, Billboard, The Line of Best Fit and more. He’s toured with Big Thief and Lady Lamb, and now is set to bring the “stunning folk” sound (UpRoxx) of ‘The Wilds’ on the road with support from Darlingside this winter- full itinerary below.
