Today (9.25), Kentucky-raised Appalachian soul artist Hunter Flynn shares “Second Guessing,” the latest preview from his upcoming debut album, ROOTS (due 10.30 via Nashville Harbor Records & Entertainment). Caught between the life he built and the love he left behind, Flynn’s new song explores the lingering question of whether chasing a dream is worth the sacrifices it demands.

“From the day I started writing this song to this very day, it still manages to elicit emotion from me,” said Flynn. “It is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written, and watching it come to life on the studio floor was an out-of-body experience that I still think about. I don’t know of anything sonically to compare it to, but I’m so excited for the world to finally hear it.”
Produced by M. Allen Parker (The Black Keys, Sturgill Simpson, Sierra Ferrell) and written by Flynn and Evan Wayne Ison, “Second Guessing” follows a man who leaves behind the woman he loves in pursuit of his dreams, only to realize the weight of what he’s given up on when she walks away with no hesitation. The song features standout Nashville session musicians including Tom Bukovac (The Black Keys, Stevie Nicks, Bob Seger), GRAMMY-nominated multi-instrumentalist Matt Combs, two-time ACM Bass Player of the Year Mark Hill and ACM-nominated keyboardist Michael Rojas, whose acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin, bass and piano parts frame lyrics that float through wedding dresses, an emerald-cut engagement ring and an old “love shack” on South Collins Street, painting a picture of the life they could have had. He expects her to fight for him. Instead, he’s left wondering: “Why didn’t you fight?”
His signature “Appalachian Soul” storytelling runs throughout ROOTS, Flynn’s 16-track debut exploring the people, places, loves and losses that have shaped his life, as well as the darker side of dream-chasing: burnout, broken relationships and choices that linger. After a life-changing car accident pushed the Pulaski County native to pursue music full-time, Flynn wrote or co-wrote every track and created the album’s hand-drawn artwork, including his recurring Appalachian astronaut character. “Second Guessing” follows recent releases “Wasted Day” (5.22), “Robbing A Bank” (6.26), “Dreams Keep Dying” (7.17) and “You, Not Me” (8.21), all featured on ROOTS.
Flynn recently made his AmericanaFest debut, performing at The Basement East as part of the festival’s official lineup and Music Blooms Here Vol. 2: A Laurel Cove Shindig. He hits the road this fall, supporting Turnpike Troubadours and Steve Earle, before embarking on his 36-date Back To My Roots Tour, which kicks off on October 1st and takes him to Nashville, Brooklyn, Lexington and more.
