Intelligence Squared U.S. Debates Announces Fall Season, Leading Up To 100th Debate

Award-winning debate series Intelligence Squared U.S. (IQ2US) announces its seventeenth season of provocative debates since its 2006 founding, leading up to its 100th debate early next year. The season kicks off September 9 with the hot-button issue of Common Core standards and continues through the end of the year with debates in New York and Philadelphia. Fall 2014 Intelligence Squared US Debates:
Sep 9: "Embrace the Common Core"
Former Assistant Secretary of Education under Arne Duncan and the NY State High School Principal of the Year give their takes on the school standards so controversial Louis CK has gone on Twitter rants about them.
Sep 30: "Flexing America's muscles in the Middle East will make things worse"
In yet another time of crisis, debaters explore how the United States should address ISIS, Syria's ongoing civil war and sectarian violence while balancing our national interests and the maintenance of world order.
Oct 7: "Indiscriminate Collection of U.S. Phone Records Violates the Fourth Amendment"
The Fourth Amendment protects us from unreasonable searches and seizures. Is the collection of our phone records unconstitutional? (in Philadelphia)
Oct 22: "Income inequality impairs the American dream of upward mobility"
An economist and a one-percenter on each side of the issue debate whether the deck is stacked against the poor and middle classes.
Nov 13: "Legalize assisted suicide"
Earlier this month, Desmond Tutu wrote an article asking to die with dignity when his time comes, yet the American Medical Association condemns assisted suicide. Renowned ethicist Peter Singer and award-winning author Andrew Solomon discuss.
Dec 3: "Genetically modify food"
They are developed to fight disease, resist pests and improve nutrition, but many across the world are fighting the cultivation of genetically engineered crops. Are genetically modified foods helping or hurting us?

IQ2US reaches millions through podcasts, national NPR broadcasts, international webcasts and other digital media. The series has won a 2014 Clarion Award for Radio Regular Feature Program, along with the 2014 New York Festivals International Radio Bronze Award for Best Public Affairs Program and two 2013 Telly Awards, including the Silver Award for Live Events and the Bronze Award for Political/Commentary. IQ2US also recently announced a partnership with award-winning publisher Facts on File to open their debate archives to high schools, colleges and public libraries across the country. IQ2US is moderated by ABC News correspondent John Donvan. Dana Wolfe is the executive producer.
