New York, NY – March 19, 2012 – On April 17, Intelligence Squared U.S. (IQ2US) will debate “When it Comes to Politics, The Internet is Closing Our Minds.” Does the internet poison politics? It’s been argued that the rise of “personalization,” the use of algorithms to filter what you see online, and easy access to the like-minded, have served to reinforce our pre-conceptions. Is the information bubble a myth, or is it undermining civic discourse? Is the rise of social media really broadening our world views, or narrowing them?
In support of the motion are Eli Pariser, author of The Filter Bubble and board president of MoveOn.org and Joseph Turow, Professor of Communication at the University of Pennsylvania and author of eight books including The Daily You. Against the motion are Evgeny Morozov, author of The Net Delusion and blogger/contributing editor for Foreign Policy magazine and Jacob Weisberg, editor in chief of The Slate Group, a division of The Washington Post Company.
Moderated by ABC News correspondent John Donvan, Intelligence Squared U.S.'s spring season debates are streamed live on Fora.tv with additional coverage from IQ2US’s media partner, Slate. Debates air on more than 220 NPR stations nationwide and are televised in the New York area on PBS Channel Thirteen, WNET, WLIW, and NJTV.
