Meet Big Jefe With New Single “Brand New Name” – Out Now

Today (8.26), Texas-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Jack Blocker announces his upcoming concept album, Big Jefe, coming November 6th via Thirty Tigers.

Across Big Jefe, Blocker fully embraces the rough-edged Americana spirit that’s called to him from the start. Blocker didn’t set out to make a concept album. During his first winter in Nashville, he started writing a new tune over a few pours of whiskey – one that made him chuckle and feel excited about songwriting again. The song became “Big Jefe,” Blocker’s first ever single that tells the tale of a reckless, drunken miscreant named Jefe, released in 2023. He started dreaming up a world around that story, inspired in part by Willie Nelson’s 1975 concept album Red Headed Stranger, as well as country storytellers like Marty Robbins and Townes Van Zandt.

“A few songs in, I realized how deeply I related to the Jefe story,” shares Blocker. “I connected the dots between Jefe slinging drugs and my own experience pedaling songs out on the road. The Jefe persona feels particularly profound to me as a touring artist. It’s hardly arrogance, but more so a light-hearted attitude towards the prospect of failure. If you don’t believe it, who will?”

Today, alongside the album announcement, he shares "Brand New Name", where Blocker reintroduces the persona of Jefe with bravado. While the song is written from Jefe’s perspective, each lyric blurs the lines between Blocker’s and Jefe’s stories – a theme that Blocker carries across the entirety of the concept album. Each line of the song comes from real experiences of his, working odd jobs and stumbling backwards into some exciting, unconventional work. Blocker enjoyed navigating the back and forth of fact and fiction once he noticed the similarities between his story and Jefe’s.

Produced by Patrick Lyons (Colter Wall, Noeline Hofmann), the 11-track album takes listeners on a journey through the world of a man called Big Jefe, exploring themes of redemption, revelry, crime, desperation, and life on the open road. At its core, Big Jefeis about transformation. It’s a story about a drifter – a broke drunkard searching for purpose. Drawn into the drug trade out of perceived necessity, he chases opportunity and transforms a struggle for survival into an unlikely rise to power as Big Jefe. Rooted in cowboy culture, vintage Americana, and Western art, the album also incorporates influences from artists like Wilco and The White Stripes to create a sound that feels both timeless and distinctly himself. That visual identity extends to the album itself with Blocker – a graphic designer himself – taking the creative lead on the project’s visuals, designing all of the album artwork and physical packaging.

Big Jefe is Blocker’s first project with Thirty Tigers, marking an exciting new chapter in his career.

Already a veteran of the road at 28, Blocker’s sound sits at the intersection of outlaw country, Americana folk, and the Texas singer-songwriter tradition. Last year, he released his debut album, The Land On Most High, produced by Big Jefe producer Patrick Lyons and released on his own label, Elbow Grease Records and his intentional songwriting and authentic storytelling have earned recognition from SiriusXM and fans across the country.
