Jonah Mutono’s Debut Single: A Tender Subway Moment Gives Way To A Salve For Loneliness

Jonah Mutono presents “Shoulders,” his debut single for True Panther/EQT. Mutono also shares the song’s music video, directed by Isaac Eastgate (Drake, Bring Me The Horizon) and filmed in Uganda.

Once known for his mystery – no interviews and no shows – the Ugandan-native artist previously known as Kidepo now steps into the spotlight under his own name. “Shoulders” is a delicate slice of soft-focus R&B that blends diaristic lyrics with a daydreamer’s outlook, providing an affecting peek at the moment when loneliness catches a glimpse of hope, however mirage-like, and lets itself get lost in a fantasy about lasting love. The single-shot video accompanies Jonah in an abandoned subway car — a reminder of how desperately we seek affection when steeped in solitude.

Says Jonah: “We are are so lonely these days. This old school sex therapist I stan, Dr. Ruth, talks about how she worries that Millenials aren’t finding lasting connections. In my experience that’s on point. A woman put her head on my shoulder in a NY subway train - and it became a daydream about the rest of my life. I still secretly want an ever after despite life having taught me otherwise . With “Shoulders,” I wanted to capture that feeling of big love in spite of that.”

There will be more coming from Jonah Mutono soon — keep an eye out for more news.
