Last month, producer-rapper duo L’Orange and Jeremiah Jae announced Complicate Your Life With Violence (out October 4/Mello Music), the follow-up to their 2015 collaborative debut The Night Took Us In Like Family. Today, they’ve unveiled the second single, “Borrowed Brass.”

Consequence of Sound featured the song today in their ORIGINS feature, exploring L’Orange and Jeremiah Jae’s five inspirations behind the track. Read it here: https://consequenceofsound.net/2019/09/lorange-jeremiah-jae-origins-borrowed-brass-stream/

“Once again, L’Orange provides a dystopian blend of cinematic and afro-futuristic sounds while Jae lays down poignant poetics in the lead role,” Consequence of Sound says. “New single 'Borrowed Brass' finds the primary character confronting the war he never asked to face. The beat drags like soldiers shoes through a muddy battlefield, coaxed onward by the hollow march of drums.”

“You mean to tell me freedom failed before we could hear it ring?” is the cutting opening line as “Borrowed Brass” gets underway. The song continues with Jeremiah Jae exchanging equally lyrically-driven verses over L’Orange’s cryptic production, with Philly rapper Lojii and Los Angeles lyricist Zeroh, as they collectively merge the best elements of each coast’s hip-hop scenes.

Complicate Your Life With Violence follows the story of a 1940’s mob boss who let his guard down and was framed for murder. Jae leads listeners through a three-part story of recruitment, war, and its subsequent dark effects, over L’Orange’s trademark menacing, lo-fi production.

L’orange and Jae recently released the album’s first video for “Dead Battery,” which gained attention from the likes of The Fader, Flood and Hypebeast, who called it “sinister and nearly psychedelic.”

When the pair released 2015's The Night Took Us In Like Family, they were subsequently deemed a “pretty seamless pair” by Pitchfork, drawing comparisons to the likes of Earl Sweatshirt and MF Doom. Outside of their collaborative works with each other, Jae has produced for Flying Lotus, and L’Orange has worked on countless albums, including 2018’s Marlowe.
