Mathew V Releases New Rendition Of “Big Spender” From The Queer Perspective

March 3rd, 2023 – Today, Vancouver-hailing jazz singer Mathew V releases his glitzy rendition of Peggy Lee’s “Big Spender.” Written by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields originally for the musical Sweet Charity, “Big Spender” brings a new layer of romance to Mathew’s album ‘Anything Goes’ out April 14th via 604 Records

As one of the first songs Mathew knew he wanted on the record, his audacious take on “Big Spender'' creates space for bold attitude and booming vocals that demand attention. Of the song Mathew says, “[Big Spender] has such a level of camp and flirtation and sass which are my favorite parts of this era of music.”

He continues, Growing up I listened almost exclusively to Shania Twain & Celine Dion. (A very patriotic Canadian household.) I found my love for melody and big vocals from these artists. I also loved Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Ella Fitzgerald. There was such a timeless quality to their voices that made me feel like an old time movie. I built my vibrato around their voices and I think it's a signature part of my voice today.”

In case you missed it, Mathew recently released his version of George Gershwin’s “The Man I Love.” As the most traditional arrangement on the record, Mathew’s take on Gershwin’s “The Man I Love” pushes the boundaries of conventional jazz from the queer perspective and has already garnered support from Spotify where the song was included in the New Music Friday CanadaContemporary Blendand Sweet Jazz playlists. The single also reached #1 on the Canada iTunes Jazz Chart. Ultimately, ‘Anything Goes’ is a mix of broadway tunes such as “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” classic love ballads such as “At Last,” and romantic jazz hits such as “Big Spender.” Always one to take on a challenge, the album also features original song “My Boy,” a Marilyn Monroe-inspired song and fan favorite on tour, compelling Mathew to include it on the album. The song was written spontaneously with Mathew's co-writer Ben Dunnill. Of the process, Mathew recounts, “Ben was in Europe at the time and sent me a voice note for a chorus idea from a public train station piano. From there the voice notes flew back and forth, and ‘My Boy’ came to life.”

Mathew V’s timeless musical sensibilities stem from a young age. At age 17 he moved from Vancouver to London and began exploring what would soon become his signature soul-filled vocal style. Following his musical awakening overseas, Mathew penned a deal with 604 Records, has become a sought after topliner in the dance world and now debuts into the vocal jazz world with his tasteful representation of the Great American Songbook.

Stay tuned for more to come from Mathew V soon.
