Today, Michaela Anne has shared “Who You Are,” a bittersweet, deeply-felt reflection from the Nashville songwriter on her mother’s wisdom and the desire to see loved ones for who they truly are. One snowy day around Christmas 2020, a newly-pregnant Michaela trudged through the woods with her mother as they talked about her growing baby. Little did she know, this would be the last walk they would take before her mom suffered a debilitating hemorrhagic stroke just a few weeks later. Michaela spent months in the hospital by her mother’s side, watching as she struggled to regain independence and as her father transitioned to a caretaker role. In doing so, she experienced what she calls “a master class in the truest, rawest meaning of sacrifice, commitment, and devotion. Love is not always easy or pretty,” she continues “ but times like these expose our truest character.”

On her latest single “Who You Are,” full of lush, cinematic strings, Michaela explores what it means to love selflessly. Backed by her husband Aaron Shafer-Haiss and a tight-knit circle of lifelong musical friends, the track meditates on the lesson Michaela’s mother has been trying to teach her since day one: “how to love for love’s own sake and not for my own gain.” Watch the “Who You Are” official music video, inspired by the final snowy walk with her mom, here: https://youtu.be/XDHiNSG0t-w

“Who You Are” follows Michaela Anne’s latest studio album Desert Dove, released on Yep Roc Records in 2019. The album was met with critical acclaim across the board: The New York Times lauded Michaela’s “alert emotional intelligence,” Stereogum praised her “casually commanding vocal lead,” Rolling Stone gave their stamp of approval on her “glassy quiver and introspective lyrical approach,” and Paste Magazine applauded Michaela’s “stunning voice [that] resembles the crystal-clear delivery of ’90s country stars like Trisha Yearwood and Deana Carter.” This April, Michaela will be heading out on tour with the Milk Carton Kids, and there’s more new music on the horizon as well.
