Over the past several weeks, up to 1,000 low-income people a day have been getting free food and groceries from two distribution centers run by Philadelphia education nonprofit Mighty Writers in the West Philadelphia and El Futuro neighborhoods. This week, Mighty Writers is doubling capacity with two new locations in Kennett Square and Camden, as well as adding an item that struggling families have been requesting: Diapers. They’ve partnered with local and national aid organizations, who know Mighty Writers is already a trusted presence in these communities and can get the relief quickly to the families that need it. Each food box comes with writing worksheets for kids in English and Spanish.
“Mighty Writers’ motto is that we teach kids to think clearly and write with clarity,” says founder Tim Whitaker. “Kids can't do either if they’re hungry.”
