Nadia Sirota Spins A Cubist, Fractured Kaleidoscope of Sound on New LP 'Tessellatum'

Next Friday, Nadia Sirota's new album 'Tessellatum,' with original music composed by Donnacha Dennehy and an accompanying animated film by Steven Mertens (Dan Auerbach, Nickel Creek, Regina Spektor), will be released on Bedroom Community. Sirota recently performed 'Tessellatum' opening for The National, and segments of the 'Tessellatum' animated film have been previewed at Adult Swim and Juxtapoz.

Says Sirota: "'Tessellatum' was commissioned in an acute fit of jealousy. The first time I heard Donnacha Dennehy's music I was seduced, I needed to be a part of that sound world, to inhabit it, even. Donnacha's work is almost cubist -- he fractures sonorities and re-assembles them into intricate kaleidoscopes of sound, thrusting piles of animated drones and pulses next to ionized timbres derived from the harmonic series."

The film and the music of 'Tessellatum' work with the idea of man vs. nature. Mertens' electric animation toggles back and forth between man-made geometric perfection and the natural oddness of the deep ocean, while Dennehy's addictive timbres move between tuning systems created by humans and the ones found in natural resonance. The resulting piece showcases Sirota's rigorous skill and otherworldy style, coalescing into an incredibly moving work of art.

All fifteen string parts were performed by Nadia Sirota and Liam Byrne on viola and viola da gamba. The album was recorded in Iceland's famed Greenhouse Studios by Paul Evans and mixed by Valgeir Sigurdsson. Produced by Nadia Sirota.

Nadia Sirota is an acclaimed, Juilliard-educated violist who's premiered solo works by the likes of Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner, and Caroline Shaw, and who's performed with groups such as Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors, Jonsi, and Arcade Fire. She is a member of yMusic, and her solo work has received acclaim from the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and more.

Sirota is also the host of Q2 Music's Peabody Award-winning 'Meet The Composer' podcast, where she leads conversations with some of the world's leading music makers. This past season saw 'Meet The Composer' host discussions with Paul Simon, Henry Threadgill, John Adams and Pauline Oliveros, as well as debuting works by Bryce Dessner and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith.

Alongside hosting the new season of 'Meet The Composer,' Nadia has had a busy summer. She performs on 'Planetarium,' the new collaboration between Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly, and James McAlister, and performed alongside Paul Simon at the Eaux Claires Festival with her ensemble yMusic. She also just filmed a guest spot on the hit Amazon series 'Mozart In The Jungle.'
