Nick Lowe Reinvents Dionne Warwick Hit Heartbreaker For Upcoming Tokyo Bay / Crying Inside EP Out June 15 / Yep Roc Records

Nick Lowe has unveiled a second track from the forthcoming ‘Tokyo Bay / Crying Inside’ EP and double 45, his first new release in five years, due out June 15 on Yep Roc Records. With backing from Mexican wrestling mask-clad rockers Los Straitjackets, he lends his signature style to the Barry Gibb-penned Dionne Warwick hit “Heartbreaker,” to quietly devastating effect.

The unconventional cover started as a soundcheck curio for Lowe and the Straitjackets while on tour together last year, and soon graduated to their set list.  “The melody is almost classical, like Bach or Haydn,” says Lowe.

Lowe’s new collection also includes the original “Tokyo Bay,” which drove NPR Music to declare “The Jesus of Cool rocks again” upon its April release, as well as the yet-to-be-released original “Crying Inside” and a cover of Cliff Richard's “Travellin’ Light.” Los Straitjackets back Lowe on the entirety of the EP, which was recorded at the Diamond Mine in Queens, NY, and they’ll hit the road together this summer shortly after its release.
