Upon first hearing Nick Lowe’s ‘Tokyo Bay / Crying Inside’ (out today on Yep Roc Records), NPR Music declared that “The Jesus of Cool rocks again,” thanks in part to contributions from Lowe’s Yep Roc labelmates and Mexican wrestling mask clad masters of guitar instrumentals Los Straitjackets. Lowe’s return to, in his own words, “rocking-hard-whilst-hardly rocking,” has also been hailed by American Songwriter, who say the project “recharges Lowe’s roots rocking tendencies,” while maintaining his sense of “sophisticated pop craft” according to Billboard. Los Straitjackets back Lowe on the entirety of ‘Tokyo Bay / Crying Inside,’ after touring with him intermittently since 2012.
The sonic departure from Lowe’s recent work marked on ‘Tokyo Bay /Crying Inside’ is hardly the only thing that makes his first release in five years (and first non-holiday recordings in seven) distinct. Along with the two original title tracks, the EP sees Lowe take on the Bee Gees-penned Dionne Warwick hit "Heartbreaker" and Cliff Richard's 1959 UK #1 "Travellin' Light." The EP was self-produced by Lowe, and recorded at the Diamond Mine in Queens, his first New York City sessions in decades.
‘Tokyo Bay / Crying Inside’ is available via all digital platforms and as a double vinyl 45 featuring exclusive artwork with each disc. Listen here: https://lnk.to/tokyobay.
