Nashville-via-New Jersey musician Nora Jane Struthers has partnered with American Songwriter this morning to premiere “Slow Climb,” the second single from her upcoming new album Bright Lights, Long Drives, First Words (out February 21). Listen to the latest offering from the songwriter who “speaks women’s truths rarely addressed in song” (NPR Music) here: https://americansongwriter.com/nora-jane-struthers-slow-climb-song-lyrics/kira-grunenberg/
"I wrote this song to my future self as a gentle reminder in moments of doubt,” says Struthers. “Some songs come easy and others take a lot of cajoling to take shape. I wrote ‘Slow Climb’ in probably an hour and a half, and after it was all on the page I thought, ‘you know, it’s just like Harlan Howard said, ‘three chords and the truth.’ That’s what makes a good country song.’”
Like much of the new album, “Slow Climb” finds Struthers on the other side of the challenges she candidly chronicled on 2017’s Champion – her first year of marriage, her difficulties starting a family and the strength she found through that adversity. Bright Lights, Long Drives, First Words clearly marks new beginnings for Struthers, recorded while she was eight months pregnant with her first child in the midst of a celebratory next chapter in her life. On “Slow Climb,” Struthers puts self-doubt in perspective while taking stock of the love, family and opportunity that continue to guide her through life and career.
Struthers previously shared “Nice To Be Back Home” from the record, on which she explores the concepts of home, life on the road and keeping her musical dreams alive in the wake of new motherhood.
