This programming follows Pioneer Works’ most recent exhibition, Grand Ole Opera, which combined visual art and musical performances. The exhibition earned recognition in the New York Times, New Yorker, Village Voice, Time Out NY, New York Magazine, amongst others.
Pioneer Works also offers a music residency program, where invited artists have free access to a professional recording studio and an in-house engineer. While in residence, musicians are encouraged to work beyond the studio by collaborating with Pioneer Works’ science, visual arts, and technology residents and integrating their projects in the center’s various public programs. Current music resident Discwoman--a NYC-based collective that showcases cis women, trans women and genderqueer talent in electronic music-- illustrates how Pioneer Works music residents move beyond the studio as they led an Ableton workshop for local Red Hook teens.
Beyond its performance space and residency program, Pioneer Works is home to a radio station, educational programs, lecture programs featuring Nobel Prize-winning physicists, a film editing suite, a print publishing arm, facilities for scientific research, and more.
