“...radiates with chic no-fucks-given energy and sizzling guitar…” - Rolling Stone
“...balances between regrets and the perverse pleasures of self-destruction…” - New York Times
“...bites with sharper teeth and serenades with a haunting realism…" - Paste
“...a strong return from the band, rife with all the angst, wit and grit we expect.” - PAPER Mag
Today, beloved Brooklyn post-grunge badasses Pom Pom Squad released their transformative new album Mirror Starts Moving Without Me (via City Slang Records), a tour de force bridging the gritty snarl of their rock roots with the dark pop that is currently redefining the modern music stratosphere to create an album that PAPER calls “a strong return… rife with all the angst, wit and grit we expect.” |
Frontperson Mia Berrin elaborates on the significance of the album’s title: “the album title is inspired by a horror movie trope and relates to the uncanny feeling of seeing yourself reflected — both literally and figuratively. It was my most challenging creative experience to date and a true labor of love.” On her creative inspirations for the album, Berrin says: “I took a lot of inspiration from my younger self on this album. I wanted to get back in touch with my creative roots. After hitting a particularly rough bout of writer’s block, I challenged myself to make a playlist of my all-time favorite songs from childhood to adulthood. It was healing in a way I didn’t expect! Before we went into the studio I made my bandmates and Cody do the same, then we all listened to each other’s and had a long conversation about them. Through the sessions for Mirror we were all pulling references from our collective playlists more than anything else.” Today’s album drop precedes a 28-date cross-country headlining tour which opens on February 26th in Philadelphia and concludes with a homecoming performance at Brooklyn’s Music Hall Of Williamsburg on April 4th. The tour will hit major markets across the lower 48, with performances in New Orleans, Nashville, LA, Washington DC, and more. Full dates below. |
Mirror Starts Moving Without Me is product of a childhood spent loving Sailor Moon, Street Fighter, Sade and horror cinema and serves as a vehicle for Berrin to excavate herself and rediscover her own identity in the wake of the major attention garnered from the band's breakout debut album Death of a Cheerleader. The result is an achingly vulnerable look in the mirror, clever self-affirming songwriting, some unrelenting guitar work, and a fair dosage of pop hooks to keep listeners coming back again & again. It has already earned major praise from the New York Times, PAPER Magazine, Rolling Stone, NYLON, Stereogum, Alternative Press and more. This month Mia Berrin graces the most recent cover of Paste Magazine, and also out today is the haunting companion video clip for album standout “Doll Song”. Watch HERE.
