August 12, 2022: 22-year-old Samara Joy is set to make her Verve Records debut on September 16th with the release of Linger Awhile, a collection of beloved songs updated for a new generation. Today, Samara shares a behind-the-scenes look in the studio with the music video for lead single “Can’t Get Out of This Mood.” When the prescient young vocalist first discovered the tune in a compilation of Sarah Vaughan rarities, little did she know she’d win the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2019, not long before signing with the venerable label that houses Vaughan’s legendary recordings. The new single and video features esteemed jazz veterans Kenny Washington (drums), David Wong (double bass), and Ben Paterson (piano), and highlights Samara’s voice “as rich as custard” (The New York Times), which has already earned her fans like Anita Baker and Regina King, appearances on the TODAY Show, and millions of likes on TikTok.

Born and raised in the “Boogie Down Bronx,” music has always been a guiding presence within Samara’s family. Her grandparents, Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon, led the well-known Philadelphia-based gospel group, The Savettes, and her father toured with the renowned Andrae Crouch. Although she has relished the process of digging through music history and learning new standards since early childhood, it wasn’t until she was asked to sit in with her high school jazz band that she discovered her love of jazz. She graduated as the valedictorian of her class at Fordham High School for the Arts before enrolling in SUNY Purchase, where she would study with her current collaborators like drummer Kenny Washington and eventually graduate as the Ella Fitzgerald Scholar in 2021.
Samara made her “glowing, auspicious debut” (NPR) at the Newport Jazz Festival last month and has announced a new string of 2022 tour dates throughout Europe and North America (full list of dates below). In a recent Andscape profile, Bill Rhoden highlighted Samara’s “ferocious touring regimen” that has found the young vocalist playing club dates, festivals and cultural institutions since earning her college degree last year. Her forthcoming Verve Records debut Linger Awhile (Sept 16) is just one more step for the ascendant vocalist, who says she is still very much a student of the music. “This is only the beginning…” says Samara. “There is much, much more to come.”
