Today (9.23), Seth Avett announces Seth Avett Sings Greg Brown, a 10-track tribute to songwriting hero and one of the most revered contemporary folk artists of the American Midwest, Greg Brown. Coming November 4th, Avett transcribed, interpreted and dove deep into the repertoire of the songwriting legend who's been one of his musical guiding lights since the age of fifteen.
Recorded in hotels across the country while on tour with The Avett Brothers and co-produced by Avett and Grammy-winning producer, engineer and mixer Dana Nielsen(Bob Dylan, Neil Young), the record penetratingly captures the spirit, sincerity and beloved characters that populate Brown's best songs. Pulling from Avett’s favorite songs across Brown’s vast repertoire, the album touches on the simple human experiences that Brown is so known for bringing to life – trustworthiness, sincerity, intimacy, and surprising familiarity – highlighted by Avett's rich voice and his precise, shimmering acoustics.
Alongside the announcement, Avett shares the album’s first preview, the stripped-down and syncopated “Good Morning Coffee.” Detailing the simple yet meaningful act of preparing coffee for someone you love, the track radiates uncomplicated love and joy, given a new life with Avett’s heartfelt vocals.

The son of a Pentecostal preacher, Brown – who Avett calls “one of the finest American poets of the last 40 years,” and the New York Times has observed is “as much an authentic creature and interpreter of the Midwest as Lucinda Williams is of the South” – through a five-decade career, has released 27 albums and has been praised for his “eclectic range of primal American sounds,” and “stark, unselfconsciously literary tour of off-road Americana” (New York Times).
“When I heard Greg Brown's music, it opened the door to a world of songwriting inspiration,” says Avett. “Since then, I've been connecting to the arc of a man's life and his story. It's laid bare the simultaneous nature of the entire human experience in a way. With this record, I just hope listeners get an introduction to Greg Brown, and for anyone who can enjoy it, I hope it's a bridge into a place that otherwise perhaps they wouldn't have walked into.”
Seth Avett Sings Greg Brown follows The Avett Brothers' 2020 NPR-acclaimed album The Third Gleam, and Seth's solo outing IV, which find him in equally stripped-down settings exploring the light and shadows of his own personal stories.
On release day (11.4), Avett will open The Avett Brothers’ show at Brooklyn, NY’s Kings Theatre with a Greg Brown-centric set.
