Today, Brooklyn’s DIY pop superstar extravaganza Softee drops her much-anticipated new album ‘Natural’ via City Slang Records, staking her claim as one of the genre’s most exciting rising voices and chameleon-like talents. Listen HERE.
Already a staple on the Brooklyn pop scene thanks to a slew of recent mind-melting shows, and a standout at this year’s SXSW (which left Rolling Stone calling the artist also known as Nina Grollman a “DIY pop spectacle"), Softee’s new album is a triumph.
Initially stemming from a devastating breakup amidst the COVID-19 pandemic that led immediately to an unexpected whirlwind romance with her current partner/fiancée, ‘Natural’ serves as an almost timeline of the emotions – good, bad, ugly & cathartic – that eventually taught her the value in trusting one’s instincts and going with what feels natural (hence the album title). Recorded in Berlin during the summer of 2021 with collaborator and co-producer sweetbbyj, ‘Natural’ sonically is soulful & otherworldly; lyrically it is profound & cathartic; visually it calls to mind a Renaissance painting – this is an album to be consumed as a cohesive aesthetic experience and to reimagine one’s perspective of modern pop.
Softee dissected each track on 'Natural' with Magnet Magazine this morning. Read here.
The visual accompaniments to ‘Natural’ have unfurled like an exhilarating artistic ride through Grollman’s brain, starting with “Molly” which recreated one of the first dates she had with her fiancée doing the titular drug and dancing in her apartment, then leading to the societal commentary of the Squid Game-sampled “Red Light Green Light” and the bloody Fangoria-approved horror short “Come Home”, and embodying her multitudes in “Isn’t Enough” where Softee brilliantly takes on the roles of a bartender, patron and lounge singer in a nightclub.
Softee will celebrate the album release on Thursday, May 18th at Brooklyn hot spot Baby’s All Right, additionally enlisting the talents of Dominic Sen, and Sweaty Eddie and Senerio of The Cake Boys to make a truly unforgettable night. Info here.
From a childhood spent singing karaoke in her parents’ basement and idolizing pop stars, to performing on Broadway with Denzel Washington in The Iceman Cometh, to past acclaim from Rolling Stone, to today’s new album, Softee’s journey has led her to the forthcoming unforgettable album, and her time is now.
