"We've had our lives saved by this band." So says Geoff Smith, bassist and co-founder of Star & Micey - and life saving, whether emotionally or literally, seems to be a theme for the Memphis-based foursome. The members Star & Micey have supported their families through addiction and incarceration, but every time something happens that seems bad enough to break up the band, Star & Micey persevere. Today, the band announces their new album 'Get 'Em Next Time,' out 3/11 via Thirty Tigers, along with a brand new, re-mastered version of their song "I Can't Wait." Listen here: http://bit.ly/1QhqLtj
Produced by Grammy winner Mark Neill (the Black Keys' Brothers), 'Get 'Em Next Time' marks the band's proper studio debut and their first album in partnership with Thirty Tigers. Lead cut "I Can't Wait" is a favorite of Star & Micey fans, but they've never heard it like this before. The track was recorded at the renowned Royal Studios in Memphis, and the new recording is injected with the requisite amount of soul. "Everything" is a no-holds-barred rock song with an element of do-or-die urgency, and title track "Get 'Em Next Time" is the clearest example of the band's philosophy - "it's not about how many times that you fall down that matters," Redmond chants, "It's about how many times you decide to get back up."
Star & Micey borrow their name from a homeless couple that guitarist and vocalist Joshua Cosby met in Memphis. After a long night of rehearsal, Cosby crossed paths with Star, who stopped Cosby in his tracks and asked him to play a song. He obliged, and much to Cosby's surprise, Star offered to play a song in return. He talked of his ex-girlfriend Micey - their relationship had just ended that day, and his chance encounter with Joshua had lifted his spirits. After that night, Cosby vowed to name his band after the couple, and Star & Micey was born.
Over the past five years Star & Micey have grown into a touring powerhouse and their shows have become akin to tent revivals. They've played street corners, pizza parlors, bars and theaters, opening for The Black Keys, Shovels & Rope, Dawes, The Lumineers and others. They adapt to any situation: if the power blows during a show, they'll grab their acoustic guitars and play unplugged; if inspiration strikes, Nick will do backflips off the stage and Josh will crash into his own mic stand.
Star & Micey will embark on a full US tour in March, itinerary below.
