LOS ANGELES—The Complete Stax/Volt Singles 1959-1968 makes its vinyl debut with two volumes featuring tracks from the previously released out-of-print 9-CD set. Volumes 1 and 2 feature the first 84 tracks from the 244-song collection, including A-sides and essential B-sides issued during the labels’ Atlantic-distributed glory days. Volumes 1 and 2 of Stax-Volt: The Complete Singles 1959-1968 are now available on Rhino.com and select WMG stores worldwide. The series will continue with Volumes 3 & 4 in 2025. Order HERE.
The set is a master class in deep southern soul with Volumes 1 and 2 showcasing hits such as “Gee Whiz” (Carla Thomas), “Last Night” (Mar-Keys), “You Don’t Miss Your Water” (William Bell)," “Green Onions” (Booker T. & the MGs), “Walking the Dog” (Rufus Thomas), and “Pain in My Heart” (Otis Redding).
As one of two major mid-century R&B studios, Stax and Volt demonstrated the evolution of R&B in the U.S., delivering a comprehensive map of gritty, deep Southern soul. Rob Bowan details the progression of Stax/Volt and their iconic artists in the accompanying liner notes, edited from his previous 1991 version.
Bowan expands on Stax/Volt’s immense success and transformation of American music, sharing “...that Southern soul music was born out of the process of integration. The racial mix of the Stax house band is evidence aplenty of this. Compositions such as ‘You Don’t Miss Your Water’ further reinforce the notion that the sound of Memphis soul and, by extension, Southern soul, is yet one more American music that is a part-Black, part-white hybrid.”
The collection was remastered from the original Stax/Volt mono single masters. In a few cases, the tapes were lost, and original disc sources were used. Analog-to-digital mastering was done with a specially modified and restored Ampex 350 full-track mono machine with original tube electronics. All equipment in the transfer process was chosen specifically to recreate the Stax sound on today’s stereo systems without compromise.
