The Ghost of Paul Revere's "Holler-Folk" Sound Undergoes Evolution on 'Monarch'

‘Monarch,’ the sophomore album from Maine’s “Avett Brothers with a twist of bluegrass” (The Boston Globe) quartet The Ghost of Paul Revere, is out today via Kobalt Music Recordings. From the flirtatious, four-on-the-floor beats of opening track “Little Bird” to the sweeping, cathartic cellos and skyscraper harmonies of closer “Chrysalides,” the album makes a triumphant statement about the necessity of pain in fueling transformation and growth- metamorphosis- while showcasing a more introspective sound for the band.

Incorporating drums, cellos, and piano for the first time, the band sought to create a sonically experimental sound on ‘Monarch’ by channeling their less-than-obvious influences- Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin- more than ever before. With separately-recorded, multipart arrangements, the complexity of the music matches that of the lyrics, which express themes of hometown glory and isolation, love, and love lost, through metaphors of New England wilderness, natural disaster, and entomology.

For ‘Monarch,’ "we decided we'd worry about learning how to present the songs live after we'd recorded everything instead of the other way around" explains singer/guitarist Griffin Sherry. "It enabled us to get a lot more adventurous with our ideas," adds bassist/singer Sean McCarthy. "We wanted to explore where we could take the sound while still staying true to who we are."

The Ghost of Paul Revere emerged on the scene after winning a 2015 Newport Folk Festival new artist contest, and have been playing sold-out venues all over New England, including the State Theatre in Portland, ever since. Now one of the Northeast's top-selling local acts, the band has been praised by the likes of Relix, No Depression, and The Boot for their signature “holler-folk” sound- harkening back to old folkways and communal music traditions- and have shared the stage with The Revivalists, Jamestown Revival, Infamous Stringdusters, and more.

The band is currently “spreading the gospel of holler-folk” (Mother Church Pew) on a tour which will include stops in NYC, Boston, and a special two-night New Years' Eve engagement at Maine's Port City Music Hall. Full itinerary below.
